Was just wondering did anyone know anywhere in Sligo or within a driving distance of Sligo that I could fish for cod or whiting. I've never caught either from the shore and would like to add them to list.
Thanks in advance

codling or whiting in winter in or around Sligo
Hi Shane
Piack any beach in winter on a caln night, small tide, and you should connect with the whiting, mind you you might wish you hadn't! The average size can be very small.
Codling is another matter. There are a lot of shingle beaches in Sligo, small but relatively easy to access and whilst I've never tried a darkness session on any of them, they tend to have a good margin of weedy ground, so you might contact some. Have a look the some of them to the west of Streedagh Point -you can spot them from the western spur on the point, in fact that small bay is quite deep and a good spot for whiting in winter. Flatties possible too. You will doubtless find that you will contact coalfish, lots and lots of them after dark and there is always doggies.
The really unusual one you might just locate is a small hake, I've had the odd but regular report of them off surf beaches in autumn and winter!

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...
2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
