Kerry - 4 Days in Brandon - Bass heaven

#1 Post by Eoghan »

Day 1 Friday Morning- Its still dark, approx 6.50am and I head to spot A. First cast and a mackerel. This went on for about 40 mins and I counted 3 casts that I did not connect with a fish. Anyway I gathered that the bass were not in this spot and moved to Spot B, a mere 10 mins walk away. Nothing for about 20 mins then bang. I knew I was not into a mack this time..!
I got 6 bass in about 30 mins of mayhem. All about 3-4Ib fish. I could see them in the surf as the waves were breaking and large herring fry were being washed up all around me. God could have taken me then and I wouldnt have argued with him..!
That evening back to Spot A and about 30 mack and this time the bass showed up and I had 2 schoolies, approx 2Ib.

Day 2 - Sat Morning - Just mack, no bass showed in either spot.
Sat avo, Spot C - just tried it to kill time - 4Ib bass taken on a plug. Out of the blue. It was 2.30 in the avo, sun beating down and we were just killing time before dinner. Happy days.
That evening back at Spot B and plugging in my own little bass alley I had 3 more bass to 4Ib all on a new plug I was trying ealier that day in Spot C, a yozuri crystal minnow - savage lure and very sucessful.

Day 3 and 4 were just macks and pollock as the bass seemed to have moved on but a savage weekend.

Results - approx 100 mack and 12 Bass.

I have added some of the pics for you. I'll put the rest in the album.

On a bad note, one bass had to be kept as it swallowed the lure down too far. I tried to get it out but there was blood everywhere, not a pretty sight. Would have been too cruel to release it as it was in a bad way. :(
All other fish went back in perfect condition

Ha ha..! Unless you count Mackerel and pollock then no. Bass were the main target as you know.
Was hoping to get a bigger fish than the 4-5 pound mark, I am sure there are larger bass there as we have seen them its just trying to find out what they are feeding on. Livebait a mack/pollock/wrasse perhaps..?
We did try whole and half mackerel deadbaits when the sun went down but no takes.

Interestingly enough I did get the two smaller schoolies in the dark by slowly trolling a kilty lure along with about 10 mack. Proof that they can see plugs/spinners in the dark

The pic is actually Dawn on Friday morning. I took the pic on my way to mark B, about 20 mins before the bass went crazy.
Got some cracking dawn/dusk pics over the weekend.

i have gotten pike on lures in pitch dark too. some on fairly plain ones with no sonic rattle.

my dad had a 9lbs 6oz bass in dingle last year on a lure (toby or spinner i cant remember) in the dark (just at dusk but it really was pitch dark) and an 8 pounder this year in the same light conditions.

Nice fish if you can get them.

I was speaking to Mike Ladle today who got an 11Ib bass at the weekend on a live mackerel. Not sure where I stand on the livebait issue, its kinda cruel but clearly works.

Hi Mate, yeah I did but not with much success. I saw a few pollock have a go at them but no hook up's. I was having too much luck with that yozuri shallow diver and didnt want to experiment too much. I do like them though and will make sure I always have one in my plug box.

Green with envy :) Good result from a well plannd trip. As Hannibal might say, "I love it when a plan comes together".

Sounds like an excellent session. I think i recognise your Kerry hotspot as one of the marks you put me onto. Fished it a couple of weeks ago and had 3 schoolie bass to 2 lb and loads of mack on one early morning session, next morning nothing. Bass and mack took silver toby and green bass bullet.
All fish returned, including mack.

Thats the one. Shhhhh..... Good to hear ye got some fish from it. We had a similar experience with the venue. One day its was crazy with Bass and Mack, the next day just a few macks. You can catch that mark some days and its unreal. About 2 years ago I was fishing it, just before first light and for about the next hour I had a bass on average every second cast. Unreal fishing. Next day nothing.

Yeah all apart from one Bass that I had to kill for humane reasons. Thats the 6th Bass I have had to do that to in 20 years so its not to bad but still not easy to do. And it was a female.... :(

Great few days fishing and I am green with envy, but I am struggling to see what it is doing in this section, not much of a report more of boast.

I understand people would want to keep the location of their marks from being broadcast on the net but I would think the shore reports section should give some mark/rig/bait info so as to be of some educational use to the less experienced anglers or give some pointers to people unfamiliar with the area being reported on ...... All this says is I caught fish in Kerry (as I say I am green with envy as I would like to get the chance to catch anything anywhere at the min :( ) and the name of one lure

Am I alone thinking this way about these kind of posts? I don't know.
2009 - France, Italy, England, Scotland and Wales.....;-)
Edinburgh, Wasps, Castres, Harlequins, Munster and Leicester.......;-)
Now to add some fish:Cukoo,Ballan,Pollock,Coalie,Pouting,Conger, poor cod....mm needs more fish.. Mackerel, Dogie, Mullet Flounder...poor year so far....

i wouldnt agree wit ya. i dont like to publically publish my marks because i no of so called bass anglers who view this website and have no remorse in taking large number of bass for illegal sale. secondly i and my friend who i fish wit have worked extremely hard and put in a lot of effort and sometimes expenditure to find, and more importantly establish their fishing times, baits, conditions etc. i dont feel i should have to dislcose this info. i think by nature all anglers are often quite secretive of their marks and if you have a specific mark, especially one which is fishing well and alot of people dont know about you will be reluctant to tell it. maby i'm just selfish
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

regards neil

There was a complaint going a while back that there wasn't enough reports going in and those of us who don't like giving our marks out publicly to anyone with access to the internet were asked to still report but could still keep our marks quiet. Most of us will only glady give information over PM to active registered members of the site. I for one am sick of comlaints about reports going in which has put a number of member off putting reports in. If this report doesn't belong in the reports section then your complaint definately doesn't. You should of set up a discussion on the web site.

cant agree with that at all marno. at least he is contributing something and would no doubt answer any questions about rigs and tactics.

venues he might want to keep to himself , i would too.

he put up some good pics, shared his success and made the effort to reply to peoples questions?

whats the problem with that??

why knock it?
