reflective tape

need to know where to get a supply of this stuff. heard there's a place in dun laoghaire? the little packets tackle shops are not enough. can anyone help? i have tried lots of bike/ automobile/ safety shops with no joy. thanks.

I can get it, but boy, it does cost
Stuff I get is the best, pasted by dti, RNLI etc

Try the boat shop on the Howth road on the way out to Sutton (I think it's called Sutton dinghy supplies?) - give them a ring beforehand to make sure they have some in stock.

Lads, do you remember a tackle shop near the wooden bridge?
I remember going into a shop with a very narrow hallway a few years back. hadnt got a shop front to speak of, just a doorway. Any ideas or am I mad?

Ive often found it strange theres no shop in or around Howth.
I know the shop at the station has the odd pack of feathers, but thats it.
Bloke called Joe Harrell had one further up the coast road years and years ago, near enough to the dinghy supply place, was a nice aul shop, where I bought my first beachcaster.....an Abu Neptune, what a rod.
The closest tackle shop is in Ballybough, as far as I'm aware.
Will we all go into business and open our own? :lol:

'JOE'S TACKLE', that's it Wes. funny little place. "they're catchin COOLIES down the end"! plenty of pictures in the hallway though. good flatties and bass. thanks for the replies lads. the scotch tape should cost less than a 10 a meter.[/b][/u]

Hi mb3, I take it the tape is for the top of the rod for bite indication, little tip for you m8, after a while the tape becomes worn and you have to eventually replace it, have you ever considered using whipping thread, buy yourself some of the silvet thread that is used for edging whippings and away you go, I use this all the time, just a few drops of super glue then whip down as far as you want too finish it off with super glue allow to dry then give it a coat of clear d**e or varnish job done used this method for years and it works try it cheer Rod.

yeah, i wanted to use both! thread and tape! good to hear it is effective though. i just hate those farty bits of tape you get in the bike shops etc. thanks.

Sutton dinghy supplies is not closed, or were you talking about another shop jd. It is on the coast road about a half a mile before you rech sutton cross. €2 for 2m and they sell handy tide books too. Good lug digging opposite this place :wink:

Was talking about Joe's tackle shop. I'm only a few minutes walk from Sutton Marine

Yeh
I remember the shop beside the wooden bridge in Dollymount, it's long gone now (shows there's not much fishing there anymore), it was right beside the traffic lights. Colm Creans shop beside the Goose Tavern, on Sion Hill is also closed down a couple of years now.
As for the reflective tape, I use strips cut from the reflective stickers off road safety signs/guards, was able to get my hands on a couple a few years ago and they work brilliantly.

The reflective material used on road signs is reflective vinyl.
Any manufacturer of road signs will have it in stock & should sell you
some if you want.

You can also get lots of different colours & it's weatherproof.

Try Rennix in Mulhuddart Dublin 15 or Fleming & Co Dunboyne.

Just bought some reflective tape off e-bay, nice stuff too. what sort of varnish would I use to secure it? is there a type of flexible varnish?

DON'T VARNISH IT!!! just replace it when it gets really tattered. save yourself the misery. have varnished it before and found nothing 'flexable' enough. very hard to get varnish to stick to the surface of the tape. tried resins and they too crack eventually. also makes the tip too bulky and the tip is the best part of any rod!

thanks Skipper. i looked everywhere for this stuff and couldn't get it without ordering from abroad. with a fishing trip looming i just went and whipped the tip rings similar to the rest of the blank. i will be using thread in future though as it is more durable. i will get by for now. thanks.
