New Rod and Reel for Distance

He lads, was looking at a rod and reel combo for blasting baits a good distance, I was thinking about the triplex 14' and a 525 supermag? I want something that isnt that hard to use and dosnt require any fancy casting to launch the bait a wee distance!!

Ive got that set up Mark and its a decent enough match to be honest. I'd recommend it.

If you don't want a fancy cast to get you out a long way, then the longer rods will suit you. The Century SRE, K2, Greys rods for example are suited to overhead thumps. I honestly believe that for the price and versatility, the 525 Mag or Supermag is the best reel to go with.

I can only speak personnely but for over head tumping I'd much prefer a FS. OHTs by their nature don't compress the rod properly lead to back lashes unless the reel to slowed right down. Alot of anglers I know used fixed spool and use low diameter braid for distance.

Are the 525 supermags easy to use? Dont have alot of experience using multipliers for casting.....

They are dead simple to use Mark. Straight out of the box with no messing about required. Load em to about 1/4 inch from top of spool, keep your mags on while you get to grips with it and you'll have no problems whatsoever. Keep your casting smooth and there will be no foul ups. They are a cracking reel, even for a newcomer to multipliers.

hey there,unless your well aquainted with m-pliers,id stay well away,as someone has already said,match a good rod with a fixed spool and use braid.....better bit detection by far.regards ivan

Well everyone has to start somewhere, Im looking for a new setup, have always been using fixed spool, want to change for a bit of a challange!

Without getting into the merits of braid v mono, comparing like with like, ie mono on multi and FS I found a noticeable increase in distance using a good multiplier as opposed to a fixed spool reel. For anyone looking to get into using multipliers the Supermag is deffo the way to go, they are incredibly easy to handle. Agree though Ivan, a long rod, 14-16' with light braid loaded onto a FS would take some beating for easily obtained distance with an OHT. Doesnt suit all conditions though, rocky marks in particular would make short work of it but on clean beaches it would be hard to beat alright.

On saying that, its hard to match the feeling when you connect with a cast properly on a multiplier and listen to it sing as the lead sails into the distance......

well i have a 525 mag and a mag elite green i like the mag elite it gets you were you need to be like but i have stopped using them i have a Penn surfmaster 60 with whiplash braid on it it gets me out the distance with a simple of the ground cast or a half pendulum cast. the good thing about it is that you don't have to worry about line lay like you do with the 2 Mag's you can play the fish more and relax if you are fishing with gripers on you don't have to tighten you line up all the time like you have to with mono.and me personally i am finding fishing more enjoyable with a fixed spool and it doesn't cost as much too witch is good the one tapered shock leader lasts me a good 2 months when i was fishing with the Mag's i would be lucky if it lasted a night.and the birds nests use to do my head in and despite what every one says how good they are every one gets a birds nest. £20 for 300 meters of whiplash that will last you 2-3 years or £8 for a good mono to use on a muti and a rely UN enjoyable time loading it over and over and over again

Keep your eye on Ebay for the Triplex Mark. They have been as low as 129 stg recently at buy it now prices. Supermags, I dont know, paid €150 for mine last year from one of my local tackle shops which I believe was quite a good price. I presume some of the mail order lads would be cheaper though??

Supermags havnt dropped in price in a long time :?

I find the supermag a great reel.The only slight problem I have with it is that the mag slider moves quite easily.Still if I had the cash I'd probably buy another.

despite what every one says how good they are every one gets a birds nest.

roughly half a dozen in the last few years. usually when i take a reel out of tacklebox and forget to check the brakes are slow enough. you could have as many crack off's with a fixed spool with line wrap etc.

if you have been using a fixed spool then why change? if you can chuck a lead a long way chances are you will be able to do it with both, especially in fishing conditions. get a good quality fixed spool and you'll be fine. put your emphesis on casting and not on which reel. i probably would have stuck to using a fixed spool years ago had i of know then that it would have made little difference.

benefits of the mag are probably just having a ratchet by comparison to a good fixed spool. multiplliers are rubbish for overhead thumping. a fixed spool will give you the option of using lighter mainline giving better distance immediately. try 8lb. mono on a 525mag and your asking for trouble! a fixed spool with light line on a long rod will go a very easy 150yards. however if trebbles of dogs are the target or there are clumps of weed to pull in it may not be ideal.

for ease of use the tripplex is great. a very enjoyable rod to use- a good fishing rod.

theres gonna be a bid demand for them from what im hearing best to get in early
