The best fluorocarbon
Lads,
Looking for a few opinions here. I have been using Berkley Vanish for ages and am bluddy sick of it. It can be very very brittle at times. in extreme situations I've had snoods even crack and break at the knot on 20lb stuff after alot of use - it just doesn't stand up to the abuse I seem to give it! Can anyone recommend a better brand?

Hi Liam,
I don't have much call to fish clear water venues in daylight so I don't use the stuff. I was fishing beside Neilus last year in carrigaholt my 15lb mono was pulling in spiders while his 25lb fluoro kept getting cut off so seems like a common complaint. I saw in this months SA Alan Yates saying he uses red amnesia as his snood of choice for clear water in Ireland.

Stopped using Berkley for the same reason Liamo. Some spools were ok then others were very brittle. Fluro, is very prone to this especially if not stored correctly. I have a few brands that I use for trout fly fishing. I've not had a proper look for some fluro over 10lb so if you find anything please let me know.

flourocarbon usually for clear water, calm conditions, or in shallows fishing for flounders. floatfishing. in heavy seas it's not essential- use something tougher like 20lb. amnesia.
berkley transition gold is good and wont break due to being brittle.
seaguar is very good also. super tough. get the bulk spool for filling reels!
lots of people don't like berkley vanish. i have not met someone that does like it actually?!
'sightfree' is another option. hav some but have not tried it yet. dosen't seem brittle- was recommended to me by a good angler.
hope this helps!

i use red amnesia on most of my rigs find it top quailty stuff. :D
Which mag was this in Donagh?
it's a funny game- some lads love red amnesia, even claiming it attracts fish. personally i have had mixed results. one thing i know for a fact is that i have had a few sessions were i deliberately used coloured line in clear water and caught nothing until i started using clear. alternating a clear rig, with a coloured one is a good way to see for yourself. red is good at night for visability. in deep water or over mixed ground/ reefs. in saying all the above lots of the competent boat anglers use red mono for rigs when fishing for dogs, claiming it works a treat for em.
at the end of the day use what works for you! even the best anglers will all disagree on what is best. if only fish could talk hah!?

I've changed recently from amnesia to the varivas flouro that veals are supplying and have to say thats its for more supple and natural than the amnesia. I use it mainly for open beach stuff or small fish and would still use the amnesia for anything above 20lb snoods.
Used the berkely vanish stuff for a while but can't say I was fond of it, did seem very brittle and tightening knots seemed to weaken it. Been looking to try the seaguar line for a while but haven't got round to picking up a spool yet, the riverge I feel is far too expensive for snood line.
Don't use coloured snoods at all unless I'm night night fishing or for lump fishing for congers and suchlike

(no probs Mark)
Froghair
Varivas (recommended)
Rio Fluoroflex plus
Rio Fluoroflex
Seagaur or Grandmax Riverge (a liitle expensive i felt)
I constantly use Varivas Fluoro (lure fishing and other applications) or the other 3 on top for differrent setups for SWFF fly fishing

Thanks for the replies lads. So it's not just me! That Berkley Transition is only the next step up from the original Vanish if I'm not mistaken so I think I'll steer clear of that too!
Red amnesia snoods sounds mad to me! I remember him a few years ago claiming that black amnesia snoods were his choice for Ray fishing. Reckons it turned the fish on big time. I dunno. I have used clear amnesia for years without question - is it time for a change I wonder....
Would love to know the theory behind why he reckons red snoods or any other colour make a difference? I always thought clear was the way to go.

Someone asked which magazine and its SA which is Sea Angler. It was the answer questions bit and it just caught my eye. I think he was trying to illustrate a point about different snood work for different situations/people and that in his case red amnesia worked for him on irish beachs but he didn't know why. There was discussion before on the forum on different snoods and someone said they thought it was the different actions the different coulours of amnesia gave rather than the colours themselves that made the difference.
I can't really add much to the discussion as most of my summer fishing I'm after ray and huss and I use 80lb shock leader as my snoods and I still loose the odd fish but I have found ultima 15lb snood very good for scratching for flats. It tangles very easily but is much more supple than amnesia.

i use both red and clear amnesia..
clear seems to work better on clean beaches where as red when fishing in rough/weedy ground... dunno why though.. just does

I've been using Sightfree in the lower breaking strains all year when surface fishing for mullet and have had no problems. The problem is my friend has caught more and bigger fish on standard maxima hooklengths!
Regarding red Amnesia, an aged and respected Dublin match angler once told me that red amesia on wishbone rigs while daylight fishing for dogs is unbeatable. I think this came from experienciences at the Daiwa Pairs which might support the clear water theory.

yep, have to say that i use flurocarbon a lot on boat and shore, 15 - 55lb breaking strain i use seaguar saltwater, they claim its the worlds strongest flurocarbon, expensive but good.
from 4lb to 10 lb i use wychwood sub surface flurocarbon, simply because i bought a load of spools of it for 2.50 euro at an angling show....he definately had it priced wrong!!!! i find it good and strong as well for the rigs for smaller species and pollack fishing on slow days.
i am also a big fan or red lines, just think, red sequins and beads work well as attractors, so why not the lines??!
also been told that if you were to put flurocarbon, clear mono, and red mono in the water that if you were underwater that the red line disappers quickest....maxima chaeleon has a kind of red colour to it doesnt it...? :?

I think Maxima have that line in a couple of shade Phil, but I'm nott 100% I know the shade I use for Trout fishing is a very light green.
I also remember a article a few year back that said yellow line was the most invisible underwater. I don't think fluro was tested then. Also it's our eyes that are doing the looking. who know's what a fish sees or doesn't.
