Very tough- no surf to speak of so no bass. Things also started happening when dark with a painted ray (54cm) and a doggie winnig it for Fenit Bob, and a ray of 47 getting mac second.

Had a great time lads . It was the hardest fishing I have ever done but we all learned a lot. When the location is that nice you do not mind the lack of fish.
PS Sorry KEV about the language but when the two mackerel hit me with 10 minutes left I though BASS and big and ever when I saw the fish I was thinking two big coalies. You do not expect mackerel in the dark

I have to say that as usual the crack was good and I enjoy fishing with this club (fish or not) but this seems to be becoming the norm.
I fully understand that these comps are set at the start of the year and we can not control the weather but a back up venue might be a good idea.

When we arrived the first thing I was told was the area was fishing well a few days earlier but the lack of surf would kill the fishing. I was then told that about 5 miles(at a guess) away there was a spot that would fish much better in these conditions that was giving up ray and a possible tope.

As we have all traveled Long distances another 5 miles might have been a better idea.

Its some setting, even for a blank. Shame about the fishing. Heard like coaster said, it was fishing really well during the week until it flattened off.

Hi all

shame about the fishing but a nice ray at least.

i think the beaches around brandon are always hit and miss. Maybe dingle itself would be worth fishing in future , plenty of space around reenbeg or the skelling and thornies almost a gaurantee in most conditions and flounder,macks,wrasse etc from a little further round.

I think when we draw up next years venues we will determine an alternate at the same time. We maybe should nominate 1 person for each comp with the local knowlege to decide whether we move to the alternate.

Lads,

In fairness we were a little unlucky, the beaches had been fishing very well all week up until Friday, when the wind switched direction and killed off the surf. I had plenty of bass to over 7lbs, along with flounder, plaice and turbot.

It’s just one of those things unfortunately. JD’s point about the alternate is valid though.

Are they common in Kerry, very rare capture off the shore AFAIK?

That is one of the species on my to do list!

There on my to do list as well (I'm also using marriage and kids as an excuse) so I've researched the differences but never get down to kerry. From talking to the kerry lads they seem to be an occasional catch but there was more about this year.

They are a relatively (relative to the rest of the country) common catch from the shore in tralee bay. Liam who owns the tralee bay SAC website has some pics of them. elsewhere they are considered rare

Other than the Tralee and Brandon bay areas, the only other consistant producer is Garryvoe in Cork and some other venues around Cork Harbour. They have been recorded on the east coast at Cahore, Clones and the Mauricecastle beaches. I know of two fish over specimen weight (10lb) taken from Tinnabearna and Ballinoulart but that was quite a few years ago. Last year, a number were taken offshore from Cahore. It is possible that there are more present but they are being miss-identified. I think a few are taken most years in the small boats festival fished around Rosslare and Kilmore.

Hi Guys,

Like Steve mentioned we were just a little unlucky. Coaster, What was the spot 5 miles away? I know the area reasonably well and the only spot I could think off was Trabeg beach (about 45 mins away) and the pegging would have been difficult in the high tides. Next year we'll have to start looking at back-up venues a little harder, I suppose the problem is, when an area is calm, you normally have to travel quite a bit to meet something different.

hi folks,just reading a few posts there,for what its worth,lower cromane which lies in castle maine harbour,there are quite a good few marks,i have friends in keel in the dingle road who i introduced to this mark and they ended up having club matches there,although they were locals they didnt know about the great fishing there.thorn back,monkfish,bass and occassional tope are the species as well as blondes.hope this is of some interest.regards ivan
