Ownahincha

#1 Post by blaker »

Lads just a quickie.

In light of the tragic events on Ownahinch strand this weekend can I just reiterate how hugely dangerous and deceiving the currents off this beach are. Really under no circumstances should you take this beach lightly and never ever enter the water.

It seems that 2 brave lads have paid the price for helping another couple who got into difficulties. I've spoken to a couple of the lads currently on the lifeboat conducting the search and they're having fierce difficulties due to the rip on the water.

Especially with the high tides this week, treat the water with the respect it deserves no matter where you are.

Awful tragedy alright and a stark warning for the rest of us not miss to a bit of wading. Inch Strand in Cork is another dangerous spot, particularly approaching HW, some savage currents running there.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D

Tragic event. Lets hope that they are found. This will in some small way give closure for the family's.
I have come across this many times through the coast guard. It is all too often that the would-be rescuers become the victims.

I hadn't heard bout this , we were fishing roscarby pier on saturday evening and the there was a fair swell running ,some prat was paddling about in a siton top canoe type thing fishing the back of the surf
The seas def not to be taken lightly all it takes is one moments lapse in concentration and you can get caught of guard , I know I've been there
Its the family left ashore who get hit hardest :(
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

One of the local trawlers (the blue one in this mornings times) has recovered one of the lads this evening. Theres high hopes given his location that they will be able to return the second man to shore tomorrow.

It provides a bit of comfort/finalisation anyway I suppose, any idea of which one of them it was?

I was sent this email this morning. I can vouch for the bona fides of the person who sent it. I hope no one minds me putting it up here...

Everyone has heard of the tragedy which struck down in Owenahincha last weekend, and the search which has followed since then.

The body of one of the victims was recovered during the week, but the search for young Jonathan Herlihy continues.

As time goes on, the cost associated with the search adds up. To ensure that this cost doesn’t cause a scale down in the search, an account has been set up in the AIB Bank in Glanmire.

All donations to this account would be greatly appreciated – it will be used to fund the purchase of fuel, safety equipment, binoculars, etc.

The account details are as follows:

Jonathan Herlihy Fund

Sort Code: 93-41-78

Account No.: 66213188
