I THINK LIKE THE MAJORITY OF VENUES ITS HIT OR MISS, WE FISHED AT THE PORTSALON SIDE AS THERE WAS A FANTASTIC TO WATCH HILL CLIMB RALLY, I KNOW THAT IF WE HAD FISHED THIS BEACH INTO DARKNESS WE WOULD HAVE HAD A FAR BETTER RETURN, ONE THING ABOUT THE VENUE I DID NOTICE WAS THE NOTABLE ABSENCE OF ANY SMALL FLATS I DONT UNDERSTAND IT, HOWEVER I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THE MACKERAL ARE STILL EVIDENT IN CATCHES FROM THE MEMBERS YESTERDAY FROM THE SHORE, ON A FINAL NOTE THERE WAS A BLUE TRAWLER TYPE VESSEL SITTING MOORED AT PORTSALON ,
A GREAT DAYS CRACK ( SOME SERIOUS SLAGGIN GOIN ON ) AND WELL DONE GARETH
CLUB SIZE LIMITS 250MM FLATS, 300MM RAYS (WINGSPAN )
TOTAL KEEPERS BROUGHT TO SCALES 9 THORNIES + 11 FLOUNDERS ALL BETWEEN 28 & 33 CMS AND FRESH MACKERAL ( GOOD SIZE )

Stuarty
Port Salom Beach and the rest of the lough are towed regularly by the boat pictured below, Allegedly owned by the nephew of a Charter Skipper from Rathmullan. A few anglers have complained to me that as soon as the charter boat starts finding fish, the trawler is along a few hours later.
Probably, Explains the lack of small flats on the beach.
I watched him tow that whole bay from tight to the shore to the edge of the bay
SACN is working towards the golden mile.. an exclusion zone of one mile ( we would like to see a 3mile zone) from the shore, where no trawling or netting of any kind is permitted

THANKS FOR THAT ANDY AND YES IT APPEARS TO BE THE SAME VESSEL,
THE SOONER APROPER EXCLUSION ZONE IS SET UP THE BETTER, THERE WAS A REPORT A FEW YEARS AGO THAT WHEN THE BOATS FROM GREENCASTLE WERE FISHING INSHORE AT BENONE THAT ALL FISH REGARDLESS OF SIZE WERE BEING PUT INTO A SKIP AT THE PORT AND THEN TURNED INTO THAT POWDERY SUBSTANCE AND FLAKE TO BE USED AS PET FISH FOOD EG GOLDFISH AND TROPICAL FISH, I DONT KNOW IF THE REPORT WAS ACCURATE, DO YOU KNOW IF THE FISHERIES VESSEL COVERS LOUGH SWILLY AND MULROY BAY ANDY?

Pictured in Fahan Mid July
Yes to answer your question it does cover Lough Swilly and Mullroy Bay
Unfortunatley in the eyes of the law the trawler pictured was doing nothing wrong,
Unless it was landing undersize fish, probably to be used as pot bait  The CFB protection vessels seem only to be interested in Salmon netting

Stopping the trawlers
Hi Folks. Over the past 10 - 15 years I have always been angered and frustrated when I see inshore trawlers hoovering up ours bays and inlets. What about angling groups putting down some strategically placed artificial reefs. A couple of these would have the likes of Redbay, Portsalon and the like being trawler free all year. Imagine the impact on the stocks! Wonder would it be illegal?
