theres a 2 page ad in it with a 525 mag xtra which they claim to cast 200yards with a clipped trace and on the other page theres a reel covered called the 525 mag xtra plus or sumtin which is claimed to cast 250 with a clipped trace but isnt out till november.. cant find anything on them. dont have the mag now but i think thats them.

Definately not the 515 which is to be a narrower spool version of the 525. On Neil Mackellows forum someone said they had a reply from veals to say it was upgraded bearings and slidy mechanism. I Can't reply in that forum since it was changed so can't ask the man himself. I'd send veals an email for the describtion if your interested.

ya it seems impossible to get any info on them. take it the 515 is taking a similar concept as the sl 30 and 20

The 515 was a limited run of reels built specially for the tournament field, they were basically the same as the 525 but the spool and therefore the frame narrower, otherwise they were the same mechanically.

515 may be released in the future as a production reel. It would be more suited to .35mm line and lower then the present 525. The 515 has only ever existed as a heavy modification of the 525.

But don't forget, no reel will cast 200+ if you can't cast it! You can have the best, smoothest casting reel in the world and the best rod to cast it with, but if your technique is not good enough, your distance will be about the same.

Munster,

Excuse me for pointing out, you need to check what reels you bought, I talk to Neil Mackellow quite a bit and the Penn 515Mag was still on the drawing board other than a few sample room demo models that he was playing with right up until a couple of months ago.

The demo models he has were 525mags with the middle cut out and joined back up.....I think you may possible be mixed up mate, no offence meant.

Lumpy,

I phoned Neil Mackellow today to clear this issue up, this is what I got told from the horses mouth. The 515Mag is due to come out sometime next year. At this moment in time there is 10 possibly 11 515Mags in the whole world, all sample room prototypes, all of these reels were altered in the UK by cutting 6mm out of the middle of a standard 525Mag, what more can I say.

The information I was given about the 525 xtra was this, it is different in as much as the whole left side plate and mag slider are a totally new concept, he recons if anglers were happy with the 525 super mag, then the xtra will blow there socks off, he did mention how annoyed Penn were by the claims in a magazine about the distance these reels will cast, saying like any reel or rod, its only as good as the guy who uses it, I think we all know that. The 525 xtra is due out later this year.

Munster06,

To end any mix up with your reels, I was told this, unless your two reels are prototypes, they can not be Penn 515's as they have not went into production yet, not calling you a liar mate, but there must be some kind of mix up somewhere, please don't take offense by what I'm saying, there may be a perfectly simple explanation for your claims.

Emailed veals about the extra reels and they say they have received and information on these reels or pricing. Sounds like penn are trying to create an advertising buzz and its working. This is the piece from Neil Mackellows forum:

Just to add my pointless opinion, whatever they are can't be bad, as the complete range of Penn 525's are second to none in terms of performance.

More of the same from Penn please!!
