west cork: glandore and beyond

Hi,

i'm down west cork for a week (from next thursday) , since my fishing has been confined to Clare / East Cork for the last few years I'm well out of touch with what's good and where to go down this neck of the woods.

Would ideally like to target plaice / flounder, anything of the bigger flatfish varieties would be very welcome. Smoothounds would be a very welome addition to the list too ! :lol:

Any advice appreciated.

Beyond Clonakilty is not noted for it's flounder or plaice fishing. The rocks produce wrasse and pollack while the estuaries will produce dogs on the shallow ones and the odd huss on the the deeper ones. Try allihies (ballydonigan strand) for bass. Check out http://www.cfb.ie for maps.

dog fishing ain't my idea of a holiday , but i appreciate the info !

might aim to go for the wrasse then, and leave the beachcaster at home.

Dursey Sound

If you do get as far as Alihies, carry on to Dursey Sound and the cable car to the Irleand. Plenty of decent Pollack, Makerel (lures/feathers) in the sound itself. For Wrasse (and they are big down there) Take the cable car over to the Island and make your way down to the rock platform (you will see it on the right as you travel across in the cable car, below the Island Pylon). Big Conger available from here also so worth taking some makerel along, cable car stops quite early so unless you are willing to camp out overnight (I did) you wont be able to fish on Darkness see http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/gallery5.htm

The world is your oyster. Never heard of anyone picking up smoothies around here but you might get lucky with Plaice and Dabs if you go off Long Strand east of Clon. There is plenty of Bass fishing to be had, try Courtmacsherry, Ring, Inchydonney. Mackerel are two a penny as ate the Pollock. If you head down Bantry way there are Thornbacks coming out at the airstrip but you have to fight through the doggies (and be pestered by dog walkers by day). Also there are Mullet all over the place. If you want anymore info, send me a PM. Good luck.
