Larry,

Try the places where you normally dig bait, particularly if you live northside. Just check under rocks, weed etc until you come across them. Plenty of places around Sutton and Clontarf to try. I’m told the supply has dried up slightly of late, so it might be hard work!

Hi Lar,

Crab are almost impossible to get fresh & very expensive from tackle shops at this time of the year. There are lots of softies and peelers around at the moment, as Steve has said under rocks, weed, carpet, piping anything structure really below the high tide line. One of my most reliable traps is actually a toaster, almost always has a large male with his girlfriend underneath in each of the slots  if only it wasnt so rusted I could pop them out into my hand.

Ye see tonnes on interesting stuff crabbing, lots of eels, gobies, flounders & shrimps. There's also the incident when Seaniebo got stabbed when out crabbing, before ye all get worried it was by a crab who was holding a piece of glass in his claw!!

Alby, that's really dangerous. You shouldn't use electrical appliances near water.

You know me MAC, have bucket, will travel. For anyone who might be going crabbing for the first time, its probably a good idea to wear rubber gloves. When your rooting around on the sea shore theres plenty of mussel/razor shells, bits of glass/metal, weaver fish, barnacles etc that can literally cut your crabbing session short! Then of coarse you have the blade wielding crabs to deal with as well!
I require a tremendous amount of calcium

:) Thats a proper northsider crab there anyway! Defo would suggest rubber gloves AND wellies especially if your collecting them from Dollymount the mud there is horrible! There's a lot of traffic cones and stuff up there so basically just tip them over and you can get a lot of big peelers.

Having read up on collecting crab and spent hours upon hours down at dollier I have had a really poor hit rate for peelers. I could have have about 30 in the bucket nearly all fail the peeler test.

I pull the second from last leg off, and if it is a new leg underneath then I keep it.
I just seem to only get the white muscle each time.

am i doing something wrong? please help
