Great Bass session, Dungarvan,July 30

Long time since I have been able to get on site, but I had to tell the world of my last session. Had a few Bass on spinners around Dungarvan, but Sunday 30th July was best ever. 5 Bass. smallest was four and half lbs BIG ONE 8lb 2oz. all within 2 hours. Conditions where fantastic in the eve. Never had a bass of that size before, so was "dead chuffed". A lad and his girlfriend from Dublin where nearby (which weas fortunate) cos guess what? I had forgotten the camera. I cant even remember his name (cos of the excitement) but he kindly took a couple of pics. He said he would have a go the next day so I gave him a spinner cos he had left his at home. Didnt get the chance to see him again, but I know he goes on the forum so a BIG thanks to him and hope he caught as well. I love days like that. When ye put in the effort and it all goes right. Sounds like a great 2 hours and no better way to take a bass than on a spinner and light line. Happy days..!

Thanks for that eoghan. Forgot to do one thing. I assume what most users say about not being to specific about the mark I fished. Obviously it would get hammered. But I would say that it was on the Cunnigar. Also not the usual place that is fioshed. I was also wondering, was my fish anywhere near a record shore caught fish. Not that it bothers me at all, cos the pleasure he gave me was the best ever. One more thing, as you said its great when you put in the effort. But its strange how I seemed to know I was going to have a good session. (Few and far between), but I will never forget that one.

The Irish record Bass stands at approx 17.5Ib's and was caught by a novice in Clare one day using some old mackerel. Son of a b**ch...no justice..! :)
The specimen weight is 10Ib+

I'd say your 8 pounder would probably be close to that in October if you released it.

Im with you on keep the mark quiet. I'd say this site has its share of poachers on it.

I have to get down there and fish it soon. Might make a weekend of it and stay in a bnb.

The Irish Record bass, a fish of 17 lbs 13 ozs was caught near doonbeg at Doughmore in October, 2000. I thought it was on a ledgered sand eel on a neap low. I didn't realise he was a novice.

I could be wrong. Was sure I read that he caught it on some mackerel but cant be 100% sure. Where is Doughmore btw..? The article that I read certainly seemed to suggest that he was a novice.

Out of interest I checked the the irish trophy fish web site and it was reported as sand eel. Doughmore is north of Kilkee in south co. clare. Check the marks page. I haven't fished there but I'm told Strong tide and weed make slacks on neaps the best time to fish here.

It was me that took the photos. I'm going down to get the photos picked up tomorrrow morning. I'll upload them then. I have to say that Bass was some size well done again. Even though I blanked all evening it cheered me up to see Bass of that size being caught.

I came back the next day to where you were fishing. Fished it about 6am till 9.30am. Fished the area with the spinner you gave me (Thanks Again). Had 1 take but lost it. I came back later that night. Saw plenty of fish hopping out of the water but had no takers. Still enjoyable few days in Waterford. Will defo come down again.

Apologies. My last post wasn't very clear. What I meant was that someone has been doing really good work to try to end poaching in the area. It was meant as a positive comment, but I didn't make my point particularly well.

I was being vague because unfortunately trying to stop illegal activity isn't always popular with everyone.

Hope that's clearer. :D

Good comments and thanks teacher. Unerstand what you meant. I think that notices should be posted by the fisheries board on all popular marks. There is one in the Aug edition of Irish Angler, Page 81. I know those at fault will ignore such notices, but it does give a warning. We all see it so many times. Some people are greedy.
I have to admit, that for the first time in years I took bass from the above session. I honestly dont make a habit of it. My treat is mackerel. Im sick and tired seeing so many take take take, and hope someone somewhere is going to do something about it.
Sorry if I sound high and mighty. I really am not, cos we all make mistakes.

I used to take maybe one or at most two bass each season, until I realised I couldn't cook.

I have no problem with people taking a very small number of fish each season, but others will disagree. It does annoy me slightly however when people freeze bass. What's the bloody point in that? Why not buy a bag of Donegal Catch instead. Enough ranting, back to work.

Poacher Recipe : Ingredients - One knife, Some courage and maybe a boat

Take one knife, preferably sharp.
Cut net
Leave to sink for 5 mins or even better dispose of net so no more fish get caught.

And wolla...!! Le poacher tart. Overdone and long overdue..! :lol:
