Whats a stinger rig?

#1 Post by Donagh »

I saw in the forum mention of a stinger rig that led to more wrasse hook ups with hardbacks. Can anyone describe it?

Hi

That was me posting that, I am still fine tuning the way i use it but I have found it a great way to hit finicky wrasse bites.

I only use it when i am fishing crab, as it doesnt really lend its self to fishing with baits that need to be threaded up the hook such as rag. (but it can be used for worm if you thread the worm on from the opposite end to the hook)

The last time i used it we were missing bite after bite on crab, no matter how long or how quickly we hit the bites. put the stinger on and had a 5 pounder on the next cast. And hit most of the bites after that. my mate changed back to the normal float rig (just to see) and missed a lot more bites.

what it is is a small treble hook ( very small) hanging just below (about one cm below) a knotless knotted aberdeen, i use shrink tube to hold the line going to the treble against the shank of the aberdeen, so that when you hook a crab the treble hangs in among the legs, so when a wrasse hits the crab and manages to avoid getting hooked on the single hook you have the treble in among the legs to get him too.

most of the time when hooked just on the treble the treble catches just on the lip and even if its in the mouth you can get it out no probs with a forceps. i dont know if other people use it for wrasse, its something i just came up with one day, so i cant point to to any diagrams but i will do a few "how to" pictures and post them if you feel that will be of help to you. you can add beads and attractors above the hook if you wish.

it does work well when the bites are picky and frustrating, we used to put this down to small fish but have found with the stinger that this is not always the case

Hi Adam,

I Get the idea and how it would work. Sounds like a variation penel rig. I'll definately give it a go. I have been using 1/0 aberdeens and the method of baiting up described by bob moss in his book.

Hi Donagh,

Yeah it is of sorts, it was actually a pennel we started using but have found this better.

Do you know how to tie a knotless knot? Thats what i use for tying on the aberdeen. You tie on the treble first with a blood or grinner and then knotless knot on the aberdeen. then just tie an overhand loop to attach to the mainline clip swivel (i use a loop so i can thread on rag with a needle and slide it down over the aberdeen).

to keep the treble in the right place its worth using shrink tube over the shank of the single hook.

i tend to use a bit bigger than a 1/0 as i have had them bend out but they will prob be fine, bob mosses hooking method works well with the stinger. As the crab is hooked side on the treble naturally hangs in among the legs.

Hi Adam,

Being honest I'd never heard of a knotless knot. I normaly use penel tubing and a bead for my top penel hook which holds the hook place even with quiet heavy fish on.

Hi

Yeah that would work too in the same way

heres a link for the knot i use

http://www.dorkingas.co.uk/Knots/Knotle ... s_knot.htm

for the stinger you are basically just using a treble hook instead of the loop and then adding the tubing, i use size 6 or 8 trebles, bronze ones

hope it helps the hookup ratio
