Hey All,
I am new here and have two kids 13 and 11 who have never caught a fish! We live near Galway and I always hear the Mackerel were great fishing but it always seems to be AFTER the fact. Just wondering if people could up date us here to WHEN they may be running and the best way/place to fish for them. Thanks In advance!

There are mackerel about at the moment in the bay, saw a couple of them caught last Sunday from a pier in the south of the bay.
They don’t seem to be about in any large numbers just yet, but they are about.
I’d say off any of the piers during high tide you might be in luck.

i saw lads on 3 different piers on sunday before the swell kicked up - there are a few coming to the boat but its not exactly turkey shoot season yet.

I’m in a similar position as the OP. Kids are 10 and 11, never caught a fish but we give it a go a couple of times every summer. We’re going to Roundstone on holiday tomorrow, Saturday, for 12 days.
I grew up in rural county Cork and was fishing regularly for a year before I caught my first trout. I know how demoralising catching nothing can be. But there was little else to do.
My kids, plenty of distractions. If the don’t catch a fish they’ll probably lose interest.
(BWT, we’ll be sea shore angling).

in case the mackeral are not around you could always entertain the young ones down the side of the pier on the rise. small hooks size 6-12 and bits of mack or rag or black wrap or best maddies, should keep you entertained with little wrasse blennys pollack etc. Just look up any LRF set up

Some good fishing spots up that direction, Dogs bay in the evening on an incoming tide is great for flatfish, size 1 hooks and a smart strip of mackerel is all that’s needed, and a short cast of 10 metres, casting further out and a chance of dogfish and ray is possible.
Lure fishing off rocks and off piers might see pollock and mackerel.
Check out the pier at Ervallagh over high tide too.

Ragworm off a harbour wall/rocks with a light set up and they’ll love it
