Clone Strand 13th Jan

#1 Post by Sean Mac »

Arrived an hour after high tide, It was a bit windy from the southwest but the sea was fairly flat with colour in the water still from previous week. Set up the rods and had a few practice casts and got my rigs ready. An up and over with small hooks and an up and over with larger hooks. Baited up the smaller hooks with frozen lug and sandeel, separate or combinations of both. On the larger hooks set up frozen crab baits. There was a good bit of sunshine. It was a lovely day to the eye but would it be good for the fishing!! Started getting good bites on the small hooks and started catching some nice Whiting. Happy days and it boosted my confidence. I was preparing baits to swap out each rig as it came in and save time between casts and it was all go. While whipping up a crab bait i glanced at the rods, as you do and saw one line completely slack on the sand, picked up the rod and reeled and found the fish. Took my time bringing it in and what a beauty, I was well happy. Kept on baiting up and fishing. Crab activity was low so the baits were lasting well. About forty minutes later again while baiting up, one the rods jumped into life nearly pulled off the stand. Picked up the rod and felt the fish and gave it some line before reeling it in. It coughed up a sandeel !! They were both in around 3lb according to the scales. Well i was well happy. Kept fishing till darkeness but no more fish but it did not matter. A very enjoyable experience.
