#1 Post by hush1 »

Anybody know how difficult it it to change a boat vhf radio from 12 volt power source to a regular household plug power system?

I reckon you'd have to use a transformer. The unit will be designed for 12v

Marine VHF radios normally run off the boat battery which supplies 12v dc. Household power gives 240v, ac. You can get mains to 12v dc power transformer units quite easily, Amazon, eBay etc, for under £20. You might even find a power adaptor lying around the house for Scalextric or other such "toys"! You will need to snip off the fitting on the low voltage cable to connect to the radio. I would suggest putting a fuse holder in the live wire to the radio, also be sure to observe correct polarity as I don't think the VHF sets like being wired wrongly!

Long Communications in Dunkineely, near Killybegs, will sort you out on that one. https://longcom.ie/
You need a mains to 13.8v DC PSU (power supply unit) as used for amateur radio equipment, CB, etc.
Or you could buy a leisure type (deep cycle) 12v battery and solar panel...
