Van Staal VR50 - any experience with it?
Hi Lads, I’m considering buying a Van Staal VR50 and I’d like to know if you have any experience with it? I’m lure fishing in all the usual places for Bass, have no intention of deliberately dunking the reel, but like that it can stand up to a bit of a soaking. I usually use a Penn Slammer III 3500 and I’m very happy with the performance of this reel, but like the idea of saving some weight, hence the idea of buying the Van Staal VR50. Any advice is appreciated.

I know Cormac Walsh in Wexford was using one. I notice he's using a Slammer lately.

Hi, yes, bought the VR50, got a really good deal on an ex display model, so had to grab it. I’m very happy with it, saves a bit of weight and it’s noticeable on a session, very happy about that. Line lay is great, casts super good. Drag is also very good, smoother than I expected. I like to use suffix 131 braid, and had problems with this braid going into the line roller on my Penn Slammer as it was very fine, had no problems at all with this issue on the Van Stall, so I’m delighted with the reel. I recommend it.Bushidobadboy wrote:Hi,

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the heads up. Hopefully I won’t experience problems after some period of use. The Slammer is a great reel and I’ll be holding onto it just in case I get issues with the VS.JimC wrote:I know Cormac Walsh in Wexford was using one. I notice he's using a Slammer lately.
