#1 Post by Its Ofishal »

Im going to update my radio and was wondering if anybody has any thoughts of a radio that wont break the bank but would be quite good to use while fishing.

Standard Horizon might be worth a look, they are reasonably priced and do what you need.

iCom radios are very reliable.
Many makes/units now have built in GPS.

Beware that if the radio is DSC (sends your position from GPS as part of the call when the red emergency button is pressed), you will need a MMSI number to unlock it. For this you need a radio operators licence (course) and ships radio licence for the boat (€100 plus radio licence above). I have an international operators licence and 40+ yrs experience of VHF, but need an Irish certificate (money) to get my ships licence. I wouldn't suggest doing it (probably illegal) but saying your boat is a tender to a mates bigger boat is a way round it.
