Arklow south beach

#1 Post by Sean Mac »

Arklow South Beach 23rd Aug and 2nd Sept
First session
High to low and two hours back up
warm, cloudy
Southerly wind light
Arrived at 12 midday, the water was crystal clear, The mark appeared to be quite deep with a steep beach. Using a pully pennel and a 2 hook looped rig casting at different distances all was quiet except for some small missed bites. As the tide came to its low point i got a cracking bite on the two hook looped rig with rag and in came a nice codling which was deep hooked so he was coming home with me. Casts at distance using the off the ground cast seemed to be reaching fish and i continued to get bites and after a few missed ones i hooked into a strap conger as the tide turned and it was getting dark. It was a lovely spot and i decided to return another day.

Second session
low to high
cool and windy
strong southerlies
Arrived at Ennereilly at 2pm, set up and cast out only to find bad weed after a few minutes so packed up and headed to Arklow south. Here was much more sheltered, and unlike Ennereilly which was chocolate coloured this water was clear. Conditions were comfortable but alas not many bites on either rod. The two hook looped rig wasnt getting any attention today. Enjoying using the off the ground cast and dreaming of being able to do a pendulum cast some day. Sunset was at 20.00 and at this time things started happening. I had three big rag on the pully pennel rig and in came a nice smoothie, next cast with the same bait and in came a small thornback, unfortunetly i had to go home as my wife was getting cold !!
