Have seen bass caught in pitch darkness from the shore on lures and sea trout caught in pitch darkness in rivers on the fly, to the point were you can't see what you are casting into at all its that black. Can't see why it shouldn't work, especially if it's a bright night and the water is clear; would have every faith that it should.
Mind you, sea trout can be a deadly fickle fish!
Also know that small shiney metal spinners work well.
