Vega Island, Norway - Shore Trip. Sept 2018

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

Vega was out of the way somewhat, it had tested and proven shore marks, and it offered outside but realistic chances of halibut, double figure cod (the bigger skrei fish wouldn't be about during our chosen time of year), big plaice, and decent colefish and wolffish, all from the shore. I somewhat felt the pressure for the Island to 'produce' too though, as I had instigated and organised the trip, but things didn't get off to a good start as our luggage (inc. rods, reels and tackle) hadn't arrived at our destination with us; indeed, it did not arrive until 2 full days later. Volatile weather too made things challenging during the week (better weatherproof clothing to be packed in future!) and in the end we only really managed to properly fish half of our allotted time, all in. But the lads, fair play to them, persisted as best they/we could in the time we had and we managed to put in a few decent sessions. We all benefited when a great halibut was landed on the third day, with the rest of the time mainly settling for plenty of cod (6-7lb bracket), coley (up to 6lb) and good dab (most I’ve 30cm) and whiting (some around 2lb), amongst a few other species. The plaice and wolffish sadly didn't make an appearance however but never before have I witnessed such an amount of shy bites (at a wolffish mark), missed takes (probably wolffish), dropped hooks, dropped runs (halibut), and the common occurance of losing fish due to underwater drop-offs! These drop-offs in particular were something that we hadn't a full appreciation of beforehand, they are something that need better preparation for on any return as they really did prove a real issue at some of the marks. It was a testing trip with a few ups and downs and at no stage was the fishing 'out of this world'; but we had fun trying and it was a decent trip all considered, it was enjoyed with like-minded people. The Island certainly does offer excellent fishing potential, albeit hard-earned, along with good hospitality and stunning backdrops. Maybe next time we'll be able to fish the full allotted time and maybe then results would be that little but better. And maybe next time we'll even see those northern lights in their full glory too..

Looks like a nice trip, like you said with like minded people.... Always good to get a gang together. Hopefully you guys picked up enough information to make the next trip even better, which is very important with these first trips.

Hi mickser. The total cost was around €900 pp, all in. To include everything - flights, ferry, 2 hire cars, cabin for 1 week, boat hire for 1 day, bait, food and drink. Mind you, some of us splashed out on some extra gear which would have added to the cost. Worth it though. A group of lads together really helps spread costs (accomm, car hire, boat..). Thnx

Despite plenty of advice before we travelled, we started getting a proper feel for the place just at the end MAC. Indeed, w would certainly have a much better idea on how to fish the marks on a return! Making it tempting to return..
