Old Gear that you think is great

What gear do you still use or know is brilliant even though its a good few years old now?

Ill start off with the original Penn MAGs, the US ones. I own some the MAG2's and have tried some MAG 3s but the MAG1 just feels better in my opinion.

I have a Garcia Mitchell match reel it is a quick release automatic bail arm wind in what looks a size
2/3000 a very light spinning reel I use it for LRF fishing and have some great sessions with it over the 45 years I've had it a great little reel

If thats the reel I think it is thats is a proper antique. crazy to think that its still working and being used.

It is the reel you are thinking about.It was given to me by my father on my 16th birthday I am now 64 and because it brings back so many memories of my time with him I only use it on my birthday every year so gets little use oiled and washed each year thats why it still in working order.

I have a couple of those Mitchell Match reels too, still in working order. I used to do a lot of coarse fishing, unlike Mickser, I had to buy my own though I won the newer black model in a competition. I used them just a couple of weeks ago to land a few tench, lovely reels for float-fishing.

bringing it out on the 12 september for my birthday down in Courtmacksherry for some mullet fishing.

I have an ancient Penn Senator 6/0 Multiplier which was a gift from my uncle which still does the job today, must be 50 60? 70? years old if its a day... dumb as dirt but indestructible. Ive been looking at these on ebay for ages hoping for one at a cheap price.someday I will have one.

Magic stuff lads...particularly your story Mickser. I have an 8ft fibreglass Milbro spinning rod that my mum bought me in 1990. I've caught hundreds of fish with it and last year my then 3 year old son used it to catch his first fish, a little flounder. Still use it regularly...not a top piece of kit by any means but indestructible and great sentimental value!

Ive a little trout rod i got off my uncle 30 years ago, dont know the name or if it ever had one, have bought plenty of rods for the minis since but always love catching something on this rod, thinking of my uncle as a child getting little brownies in his local river, which are now sadly long gone.
Another bit of kit is a seat box i have from a great club member, Ray, sadly no longer with us - ray was always in super form, no matter how hard the blanks are or how bad the weather, I just think to myself how he would be making me laugh right now, forgetting all about the misery!

Id give anything to get my hands on a shimano speedmaster multiplier other than that i still own what i believe is the best rod greys ever produced the original apollo with the red markings 14 ft still use it today also own an awb from daiwa its banged up but stil a great rod

Plenty Speedies on WSF, have a few with mags fitted as good as any modern reel

Hi lads thanks for your sentiments on the reel my father gave me when I was a kid.It got me into fishing and later on in life I progressed into bigger and more powerful rods my oldest one is an original ABU 464
Atlantic zoom 12ft Beach casting rod the one Neil Mackellow made famous when casting over 200 yds that was a record at that time and like Neil both have passed away.This rod is geared up with an original
Shimano Speedmaster super high speed tsm IIc fs Reel both over 30/40 years old and used regularly

Love the speedmaster lads, have 3 of them, feisty and a bit on the edge, but made to last with a little care, still a few of them appearing on ebay, best models are IIC and IIC FS, ones without centrifugal brakes are a bit too wild but can be magged.

Getting to grips with the Shimano Speedmaster super high speed when casting you reel in until where you want to cast from then you adjust the spool tightness so your weight doe's not drop tight or loosen the centre spool to allow it to just drop slowly this takes a few tries to get right but when successful you can get cast's without birds nests

I like the Speedmasters as well. I have one that I've re-built. New bearings and I've upgraded the drag. I like fishing it for hounds off the boat.

My favorite oldie, has to be my Abu Suveran 4000 spinning reel. One of my first serious purchases for Bass fishing. What a reel.

unfortunately I never got to courtmacksherry this year but have used the Abu/garcia reel locally for mullet with a little success 3 between 2/3 lb.
