Reel size

Lads,

Can anybody tell me what reel size is best for lure fishing?

I bought a Diawa CF 3000BG and it seems very small, too small in fact!

Do i need to go up to a 5000?

Shore lure fishing for Pollack, Bass, Wrasse etc? I would think a 3000 would be plenty big enough.

well big enough if your using braid eg berkley whip lash or power pro or any braid for that matter as long as your not skull draging fish in or cranking fish in from heights by use the reel to do this if you get what i mean i use 2500 shimano reel for all my bass en ,the shimano reels sizes are smaller that the dawia sizes eg 2500 dawia is bi than 2500 shimano so your reel just right

I guess im used to looking at something a bit bigger, im gunna send it back for the 4000 version which i think will be the right one for me.

Modern braided lines have meant smaller reels for both shore and boat. Remember that if you're lure fishing, you will be holding/casting your rod and reel all day. Smaller/lighter gear will be much nicer to use.

Cool, ive a trip booked to kerry in June and am trying to upgrade my gear to a decent standard. My old plastic no name spinning reel looks really big compared to the one i ordered.

Also can anyone recommend some braid which wont break the bank either?? Im thinking j braid?


Actually ive found somewhere Sufix Performance Pro 8 braid at a good price so am gunna go with that!

No particular hard rules, whatever you like. What lenth/rating is your rod ? for me reel size is more dictated by rod lenth and rating, more so than what line im using ie i use braid on a 10000 big pit and a 4000 shimano spinning reel.

I generally stick with power pro or other reputable brand. 15 - 20lbs b.s. should suffice. I use 2500 - 3000 sized reels for pretty much all my boat and shore lure fishing. I have a couple of 4000 sized reels but they seldom get used.

I use 3000 size for pretty much everything. Big fan of Shimano.

3000 size perfect i a few loaded with 20lb braid power pro or whiplash
