Clone Strand Co Wexford 02/10/16

#1 Post by Larry 90 »

Im only getting back into fishing after about a four or five year break so I was itching to get out. I had fished three sessions before this one and had three blanks.

The first at Roadstone Arklow I blame on me just getting back into things, I decided to go last minute and bait was canned fish from the supermarket and some rubber lures I dont know what I was at. The second I only had some sandeel and makerel I was better set up but it was a daytime session at Brittas bay also a seal cruised by not long after I set up so maybe he scared all the fish away or maybe if the fish were there they only wanted a worm bait or nothing at all.

The third time at Clone strand I went with a friend who got a lend of a rod and reel I had spare as he has no gear at all, now he has a tendency to lose gear on me and tonight would of course be no exception. Long story short we were there fifteen minutes and on the first cast he managed to snap the rod   and lose the trace and weight. We doctored something up and he got a few casts out but also lost another two sets of gear and gave up. I fished on but was a bit annoyed and I would say I missed bites when everything was going on and to be honest I just wanted to go home but stayed a little bit mainly because we had got bait and I had driven down there not far but I made the effort because I did really want to fish that night before this happened and didn't want it to ruin my night but it had.
Bait was fresh rag, razor, black lug, mackerel and sandeel, not that we got to use much so I brought what bait was left home with me.
Disaster is an understatement such a bad night and a lesson learned. :(

I wanted to use the rag up they had been in the fridge since the bad session a few nights ago so I decided at the weekend to go back to Clone again. I had the rag still alive and well and the sandeels which were not the greatest after being refrozen I just didnt want to waste them and a fresh mackerel from the fish counter in the supermarket. Got three fish the first a weever hate them fellas :( he took a ragworm tipped with a small piece of mackerel and two flounder both were 23cm and both on straight rag. Fished for about four hours altogether and tried a few different bait combos like straight mackerel, sandeel and mackerel, rag and sandeel and rag tipped with mackerel. There was a small surf running when the wind got up a bit.

I was delighted I had managed to get something and not blank this time it was also a nice boost after the disaster during the week and a good way to spend the evening as well. Cant wait to get out again soon.

Tight Lines :D

Ah yeah lads sometimes a blank can throw you especially if you are confident you will catch heading out and end up with nothing or you have travelled a long way to a spot or something. I have to say I am glad I persisted and ended up with something.

I remember fishing with a fella years ago and we were there six hours at least got nothing all day right before we finished I had moved down a bit as we were on the rocks and was trying to get a last cast into a gulley I spotted earlier I had my back turned five minutes heard a load of shouting looked around to see his rod departing for Wales in pieces, he told me as he was taking his rod apart to pack up he spotted what he thought was a bass jump right in front of him and lost it

Nice report. Fair play on keeping at it. Can be tough when theres no return for your efforts. We had a shocking run of about five sessions last month. Nothing only blanks and a few whiting. It all came good and we had a good run of about five or six sessions where we were hitting decent ray and a few nice codling. So stick at it and you'll be rewarded. And after a few blanks nothing feels as good as lifting into a decent fish.

After 3 blanks you must have been questioning the wisdom of returning to fishing but now it's onwards and upwards!

Brittas has been quite poor even when it had a perfect surf it only produced small flounder .i wonder if pollution from the river up the north end is putting the fish off ?
