Ground Baiting

Did anyone see the article in Total Sea Fishing (July issue) about ground baiting ?

Basically the guy buried a selection of fish, squid baits a 100 yds out at low tide and then fished that spot on the incoming.

Seemed to work for him... few thornbacks.

The only thing that occured to me was that if I were to do this on my usual beach marks I'd have to go for a few pints before there was sufficient depth of water over the distance I tend to fish at ! (has some advantages)

Anyone tried it ?

I caught my biggest ever Bass groundbaiting by accident really. He had too much bait so I spent 10 mins or so chopping up squid and sandeel etc and dumping it into the water close to where we were fishing. About 30 mins later I hooked the fish on the exact same bait we had groundbaited. Not sure if it was coincidence or not but seemed to work.

article in tsf a couple of years back on guys groundbaiting with squid rings for bass, it worked!

Ive used it in the past for big flounders. A depression in the sand filled with crushed crab mussell and anything else on the shoreline, covered with a flat stone.

I've started using this trick too but can't say for certain whether results would have been any different. It is working a treat off the rocks though...

For the last couple of months we've been taking home all our leftover bait after a session rather than chucking it into the sea and refreezing it, mackerel, lug, sandeel, squid, crab you name it. When we've gathered up enough it's all defrosted and minced and the "slop" is put into empty chinese cartons.

Here's the recipe, two of these chinese cartons plus a big box of weetabix (closest i can get to bran...) and half a bottle of pilchard mixed with some water. Let it sit for a while to allow the weetabix to soak up all the juices. You should see the slick and all the particles (weetabix) it creates in the water. It's driving pollack wild and I'm catching coalies off rock marks where I've never even seen them before...

when fishing marks like ballylumford and piers,im gonna try this trick,get a very small holed net,fill it with slop and tie a rope to it,chuck it in,and fish right next to it,should work :D

was thinkin of trying this as well. have some groundbait frozen in the white persal bags you get for washing clothes. hoping thee might work.

We tend to use a small bag you get oranges etc. in ,fill it full of mashed up bait and bran bung it down a gap between boulders and see what it attracts ,you get the odd conger grabbing it to ,i even had one about twenty pound on the conger gear when i put the net bag on the hook :lol:
it def works but can attract alot of crabs as well .

you say about these chinese cartons.
what do these chinese cartons look like? and how would you set this up

Sorry! Looking back at my post it sounds confusing! I just use the empty chinese cartons from the takeaway to store and freeze the stuff in after I mince it all up ;-) Have nice tidy little boxes of it that I can take out for a session every so often.

Ya, after that when it's derfosted and mixed with weetabix or oatmeal the whole lot is it's an onion sack or similar......

not sure i understand this, forgive my ignorance (i am a novice to fishing). when groundbaiting off rocks do you drop off the take-away at some spot at low tide then simply wait around for the tide (and fish) to roll in??!! then fish that spot? clever that... :)

Ya, or another good trick is leave a phone (preferably waterproof) lying around somewhere and let the fish call in the take-away themselves. Give it 10-15 minutes and then start fishing :wink: :wink:

A good way to ground bait is to do it the same way as coarse anglers.
I have tried it with some success :)
Use either pva bags or netting, and fill them with small bits of squid, rag, or whatever you have.
pva disolves in water quickly, So i try to keep the pieces as dry as possible before casting or even wrap them in bog roll before putting them into the bag, The pva disolves and the bog roll falls apart releasing the ground bait. No good with a strong tide/currents, The bait gets washed away too quickly :(
