Boat rod for Kilmore

Have a trip planned for Kilmore next week. Picked up a couple of Rovex Integra Gold Boat rods this year. One is 12 lb class and the other is 20lb. Wondering would I get away with the 12 lb down there for jigging hokkais etc as well as gilling? Want to go light if I can but don’t want to be tangling with others either…

12lb class rod is perfect down there ,great for jigging and soft plastics and gives a nice feel instead of hauling up with a broom handle - try the shamrock sabiki down there for macks ,they work a treat
I use a 12-20lb class rod for most of my fishing down there , I like to fish as light as possible

Nice one cheers, looking forward to giving the gilling a go too. Have some sidewinder shimmer eels and will pick up some black jelly worms maybe.

Find the whole line ratings thing confusing. Lots of rods seem to be labelled 6-12lb or 12-20lb. The two rods I got are 12 lb and 20lb so not sure whether the 12 is equivalent to a 6-12 or 12-20 but apparently it’ll handle up to around 10 oz.

Depending on the speed of drift a 6-12 would be a great rod for scratching around (>8oz leads). Bring a 12-20 in case you need to go heavier than 8oz..
If you have mind for lure.... Bring a light lure rod and use some jig heads... Great sport!

Thanks Jim, would love to try the lure rod. Have a 10-40 bushwhacker . Thing is, there'll be a good few on the boat. I just assumed that if I use 2 or 3 oz jig heads that I'd end up tangling other people's lines?

bring 2 rods when you have the drift with use the light rod as the lines will be going away from you and the heavy going the other way that way you can use heavier weights to keep the line as straight down as you can

The bushwhacker should be lovely. It should take an 80g head (guessing here...).

Get a range of heads from 30>
Just be cute on the drifts.... Nothing to stop you flicking ahead of the boat and then working the lure back.
Keeping in contact with the bottom will yield good results too.
