Lure rod for jigging for mackerel

Was thinking of trying out my savage gear bushwhacker 10-40 gm rod for jigging for mackerel this summer from the boat. Just wondering has anyone any idea what leads I might be able to use without fear of breaking the rod?

2oz leads are perfect i use 15-20lb braid with an illex rod great fun will bring up 6 mackeral, I retie my feathers tho as i put the snoods only 4-5" and 1 foot apart as it saves alot less tangles with lighter rods

For real sporting fun with a rod like that, try just one lure or feather or whatever. With several macks on, they all pull in different directions and "cancel" each other out so it can feel a bit like hauling a dead weight. With just one on light tackle, its electrifying! I used to use an old trout spinning rod with the one hook, and the fight was incredible - like a mini wahoo. As somebody once said on here, if macks grew to 4lb weight, we'd fish for nothing else....

Nice one , I'll give it a shot with 2oz lead. Guess it just depends on the tide on the day. like the idea of scaling down the tackle for them if possible

Iv done that in choppy conditions too the thin braid cuts threw it and it works nicely

Dont mind the tide too much, the depth they're at is more important. If they're down at 100ft obviously you have to lead up, but if they're near the surface you can even freeline at times. Experiment.

I normally cut the hokkai in two and just fish with the 2 lines as opposed to 4 as if you hit them you spend more time untangling the lines than catching them, and removing the odd hook from your finger.
