Some fly fishing for a change

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

Drove around the Antrim coast this evening for a bit before I eventually found some settled water out of the wind.
Passed a fella parked up along side the road getting some tackle together and preparing to launch and fish from a kayak; wonder how he got on..
Also noticed a decent sized comp taking place on Waterfoot beach. There must have been at least 20pegs and they were still there when I left into dark. Wonder how they faired too..
So anyway, I got onto my mark initially with a spinning rod but on my first cast i noticed small handfuls of sprat being chased out of the water, right in close to me! Knowing that this opportunity doesn't arise too often, I ran back up to the car and quickly set up the fly rod.
It is was a perfect wee session I guess, practically a fish a cast 8) - if I wasn't getting a fish then there were several hitting the fly but not getting snagged, they were at least trying to get caught anyway
They were all small pollack - was hoping for a bit of variety, maybe a sea trout, or a cod or coley but there seemed none around - but I did manage several that put a good bend in the rod. Biggest was maybe just over 2lb.
All good. A couple of pics from my phone:

Nice little session, a 2lb Pollack would put a pleasing bend in a fly rod, Bud Abbott emerger

Davie McPhail emerger JW, don't leave home without one
yeah, nice wee scrappers. I got pulled into the weed twice by 2 good fish where i couldn't get them out again, fish and fly lost on both occasions.Would only be guessing sizes..
