Species check

#1 Post by krisreid »

Hello there,

Quick one. Whole out fishing on a north wexford beach a couple next to us shouted down. When we got there the lad had foul hooked this. Obviously dead a while.

Any ideas? I'm guessing stingray?

Thanks

This is a picture of a chuckroo Ray that I found washed up dead on a County Antrim shoreline a year or two ago.
Like your photo, the wings had curled up on this fish too; it too was badly decomposed.
As the answers above: definitely a ray but hard to tell which species. Hard to see any defining features from your pics (thorns or markings etc) but given that it is from North Wexford then I'd guess thornback. Your fish is definitely a little male ( seeing the gonads) but realistically there's every chance it could be any of: thornback, spotted, blonde or cuckoo. Defo not a stingray.
Only way to find out exactly what species it is would be to do an autopsy... Wouldn't fancy that much! :P

Excellent stuff - thanks a mill for that. Just thought it looked a bit alien.

Chuckroo Ray looks cool.
