Three fish you would like to catch...

#1 Post by Livid »

... that you've never caught before?

1. Bass!!! - My King of fish! Beautiful creature, doubt i'll ever catch one but it's certainly one i would love to get! For the like of myself who may never get to see even one caught, i sincerely hope that catch and release measures are preserved for future stocks!

2. Plaice! - I have only ever caught one flatfish before in my entire life, a Flounder when i was young. Plaice has always been my favourite Flattie and i'd certainly hope to catch one someday.

3. Turbot - Another Flattie i have a facination with yet i'm not sure why, perhaps it's potential size has an appeal but i also think they are a nice looking / beautifully camouflaged fish.

Other who narrowlly missed the top three would include:- Blackspot Sea Bream, Cuckoo Wrasse, Spurdog, John Dory

American Striped Bass : Those fish grow way bigger than European Bass and by all accounts are very similar

Large Mouth Bass : Supposed to be a great fight on light tackle

Ray : Believe it or not I have never caught a Ray of any species. Really weird. Not that I have really fished for them but you would still expect one to turn up once in a while, especially in Kerry

Mine would be something like ........

Bream : any of the different ones available in Ireland

Smoothhound: something that would properly pull back from the beach.

Turbot/mullet/ray: can't decide which  ooh and a cooko wrasse. :?

Definetly a huss, so few of them up my neck of the woods I'm beginning to develop a mild obsession. Going to have to nip down to Mayo to sort that one out.

Tope...loosing any I hook and watching boat partner land plenty has driven me mad...hopefully sort that out on the Swilly shortly.

Porbeagle...be very pleased to even see one

targets for 2006

#5 Post by kieran »

Hi

Triggerfish - seen them three years in a row, hooked a few, none landed.

Gilthead Sea Bream - have to visit Cortaz in Dungarvan before too long!

Bass (in Mayo) - beginning to sound like Captain Ahab, I know...
Kieran Hanrahan

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Tope...boat or shore, I'm not fussy. Have to give The Swilly another lash V soon....hopefully with less fuss than last time. :D

Triggerfish...never even seen one but I believe they haunt one of my favourite marks-Bridges of Ross at certain times of the year.

Thornie...from the shore, had them from the boat but never the shore. Did manage to hook and lose one recently at Inch in Cork when the leader knot popped :(
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D

Well since my species list since I took up sea fishing is still very short (see below!) I guess anything that gives a good fight would be on my list.
Probably top 3 would be
1. Bass
2. Tope
3. Huss

Species list so far for 2006: Flounder, LSD, flounder, turbot, more flounder, whiting, even more flounder, coalie

Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

All from shore as I don't fish from boats

1. A Bass over 5lb. High singles would be nice.
2. A tope. (A 5 or 6lb would do but would love a double figure tope)
3. A big wrasse.

The marks I'd fish for these would require a 4 hour round trip along with the spare time I haven't got. And for tope getting fresh mackerel before fishing means extra traveling.

Bass - Agree with Livid 100%, 1 of us need to get a Car and start getting obsessive about Benone Strand!

Bull Huss - Also High on the List, Never had one, I know its just a Big Brutal Dogfish but I'd still love one.

Double Figure Conger - Only had them to 6lb, Maybe a task for this year... Might have to call on the Services of Ronald and Davy again.

That's more like it Coaster. Similar for me.

1-Bronze shark form Namibia. (maybe next Feb 8) )
2-Garrick (Leervis) on a fly in this estuary.

That's me having a go a couple of years ago.

Next would be anything from this beach which is just below the estuary.

Bass - only tried 3-4 times but I lost what must have been a Bass on Roinn Na Spaineach over the Easter and it nearly drowned me so they got to be good will try in earnest from next week.

Trigger fish - seem exotic

Mullet - when I was dipping a hand line for crabs in Carrigholt I saw some strange motions in the waste bait scraps that I was throwing in and there was some very faint shadows picking at it. I tried to freeline some mackeral in a tiny hook it was nibbled and bit but never managed to hook. To be so close to feeding fish and to have a baited hook and get nothing did my fri**in head in. If they could speak English they would have been shocked at my language. I will try again but with bread fluro line and ground bait........probablywith the same result.

3 best results.

Spanish Mackeral & Sail Fish -both trolling off the back of 'the Eye of the Wind' when crewing on the tall ship while sailing the Barrier Reef in the early 90's (it had everything)

Blue Shark - out of Cobh

Great post Livid,

Mine would be -

1 - "Real"cod over 6lbs
2 - Smoothhound over 4lbs
3 - Bass on Shallow Diving or Popping Plug

I think more importantly I have a few marks & tactics picked out for each bar the hounds, which I'm having some difficulty with catching one over a pound

He records his radio show, and plays it with a special underwater speaker, the Fish, desperate for somewhere to hide Jump clean out onto the Shore, where Steve does his own special variety of catching...

2. Black Bream (seen one caught down Courtmac way recently)
