Little Killary Friday 17th October

#1 Post by kieran »

People: yours truly...

Duration: 3 hours

Tide: down from HW

Weather: gale from SE blowing into and across the bay, intermittment light rain

Bait: frozen mackerel

Rigs: one and two hook flappers with six ounce grippers

Results: 3 dogs, first a specimen and a half...

Report: Had been told there were mackerel in little killary and felt it might produce something. Weather was fine on the way there but deteriorated very quickly.

Fished from just shy of the island and had to cast towards 3 to get it out at 12 due to the wind. Fearsome conditions. Wind was pushing a dropping tide out even faster. Saw a few gannets fishing fitfully but most of their plunges were very close to the island. They also spent a lot of time scanning the beach, Glassilaun, but I could nor see if they were diving there or not. The other place they spent time on was on the far side "behind" the terminal for the cages. Anyone ever tried to fish off that peninsula?

Tried a bit of spinning too, down low, but to no avail. Tried a second rod close in to see if there were any ballans or congers around but never got a tap, which was a surprise. That said, it is my experience that Little Killary always fishes badly with the wind to the east...

Lots of seagrass weed, odd lump of kelp coming up.

First fish had serious weight, so much so I checked it carefully to make sure if wasn't a small huss. It was easily specimen standard, very heavy. Fought like a bucket. Two smaller cousins followed at 30 minute intervals. No signs of any rays or flounder or anything else. Gave up when it started to really come down... still, nice to be out in the fresh air.

when you are talking about the cages do you mean the ones off Rosroe pier - anytime ive tried there its a killer - plenty of dogs but rough ground

the bottom is full of the hard tube worms

the rays dont seem to show at killary like they used to anymore
