West Cork night fishing 29/07/2014

#1 Post by Dave78 »

People:Myself and John

Duration: 5 1/2 hours

Tide: On the drop

Weather: Warm , dry , clear sky.

Bait: Razor, Mackerel, Squid, Sand-eel, Peeler Crab

Rigs: Pulley rig, 1 up 1 down flapper, 4 hook paternoster.

Results: 5 Bull-Huss, 8 LSD, 1 pin whiting

Report: After having some success, down East last time out(dogfish and a strap conger), we decided to go West Cork this time and fish by darkness as opposed to the rising tide.
We stopped on the way to chance our arm for a few fresh mackerel, it was not to be we managed 1 pin Whiting on a dirty dick lure the same size as it.
We packed up and arrived at the beach just as the tide was turning, we fished for the first hour without a tap on the rod, our baits being stripped by the crabs, as soon as dusk came so too did the fish, we had a couple of Dogfish on mackerel and squid, but things really got going when we started to fish squid and Razor cocktails, this resulted in some fierce bites, but no takes at first, we had another couple of doggies(biggest a little over 2lb in weight) before I lost a very big fish about 20 foot out, at first I thought it was a bass but I soon discovered the bites were Bull-Huss holding the baits in there mouths and spitting them out at the last second, we had 5 Bull-Huss in the next hour biggest 8lb 4oz.
Overall it was a very enjoyable night, I beat my PB for Bull Huss twice in the one night and we both added another species to the list for 2014, the advice we got from a friend of ours Ian was spot on, he told us use razor and squid as bait and be prepared to watch the bait being spat out as you go to land it

Nice fishing lads. some fine Huss there. Huss can be a pain holding onto baits until they hit the surface; just give em a bit more time and let the bite develop.

We have had another 2 trips to this mark since the report was first put up,
Last week I travelled there with Ian and he managed 2 Huss 5lb 8oz and 5lb 3oz along with a dozen or so dogfish, that night they were falling to Mackerel baits with a glow in the dark grub just a few mm above the hook, the added attraction seemed to work the same night the squid and razor combination only saw 2 fish caught unlike the first night we fished here when the squid/razor cocktail clearly out fished the Mackerel baits.
Last night myself and John fished the spot again and just at the start of the dropping tide I managed a specimen Huss of 12lb 3oz that was followed by 2 to 3 hours of small bites and no takes 3 dogfish followed then nothing.

Last night it was the glow in the dark grub above a 2/0 mackerel baited 1 up 1 down flapper rig that produced the Huss again.

We have fished this spot 3 times now, all by night at various states of the tide, low to high, high to low, a few hour before high tide to a few hours after and each time it has produced Huss in the 4-5 lb bracket on a regular basis with an 8lb 4oz and a 12lb 3oz and a few just over the pound.

One more session here to come in the next fortnight before we go chasing Ray.
