Nine Mackerel caught off Howth in two hours this evening.

The seals are haunting the place though, must have lost another six to them.

Reading over the last week's posts here and bearing in mind the discouraging reports in recent years, there seems to be relatively strong anecdotal evidence of a serious and significant decrease in Mackerel stocks in inshore waters. Am I wrong, is that an incorrect conclusion? :?: :| Certainly, my own experience over the last 7 years is of an ever diminishing return for a keen shore angler in the Dublin and north Wicklow area.

Would be interested to know if anyone on this website has done a statistical analysis of Mackerel reports since this page started 9 years ago. Also, can I assume that the State's Fisheries authorities (e.g. Maritime Institute, fisheries boards) is keeping track of Mackerel populations?

Anyway, like most of you, I'll still keep plugging away - hope springs eternal! Though mind you I haven't yet been out this summer - it is getting later every year! :(

Keeping the faith (for a while longer!), :?

Thanks for that - I read and remembered I came across this last year.
I've also just done a quick Web search: seems over-fishing mainly by Iceland Faroe Islands in the last 3-4years, during which they substantially increased their quotas, has caused the problem. EU has imposed santions on both those states with threats of more to come if they don't behave.

So, I guess we'll continue to face ongoing dearth of inshore Mackerel for the foreseeable future; at least until some common sense takes hold. And even then, we'll have to wait for fisheries stocks to recover. Coupled with the migration of North Atlantic Mackerel northwestwards to colder waters around Iceland and Faroes - as ocean temperature increase (global warming) - there's little grounds of optimism.

Guess it's time for Plan B: I'll have to bring forward my retirement plan to ditch shore angling and take up river/inland lake fishing: trout and salmon here I come!

Fished Greystones yesterday morning from 4am to 9am, perfect conditions and not a sniff of a Mackerel :(
Got plenty of pollock and launce, but not the target fish I was after ;)
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office!
