Im hopeing to spend a little time up that way in the summer and was wondering about all sorts of things.

Does anyone have any tips on the area.

im hopeing to fish the river for Salmon and have heard the sea trout fishings good in the estuary.

Do the catch Bass around that area or am I restricted to pollack of the rocks etc.

If any one has advise on saltwater in that area please help out.

cheers

Hi Barramundi

Not quite so secretive about marks on this board! I can't really give any specific advice at all except the following hints.

I guess you have looked at all the info on the Shore Marks part. The search engine at the top of the page works very well and you will certainly pick up a few pointers that way. In particular there was some good advice on Sea Trout a month or so ago, so try searching on that as well. Lastly I don't think bass are too plentiful up that way but I'm happy to be proved wrong. However, I would think that the pollack on the fly will be quite an experience - they just seem to grow much bigger in Ireland and when they get to around 4-5lb they can be quite a handful and well worth going for.

SW FF

#4 Post by derekk »

the moy estuary is a well known sea trout haunt but its more like fishing a loch than actual SW FF. If you can, head to ballyshannon and the erne estuary. Its a great spot for sea trout and you are fishing right on the beach. Its about 1 hrs drive from ballina. You could also try at the beach at easkey (close to the river) if the winds are favourable but the erne estuary is tops.

To get to the earne estuary drive to bundoran. On going through bundoran heading to ballyshannon you will see a KFC. Turn left and park in the car park. Then prepare for an 20minute walk down tullan strand and you will come to the estuary. On this side there is a nice sweeping bend in the estuary so its easy to get the wind to aid you for most wind directions. Get there for 2 hrs either side of low tide.

Sea Trout a plenty

#5 Post by kieran »

Ahem!

A party of six French anglers (on boats mind you) took 51 (yes fifty one) sea trout in a day on the Moy channel, all fishing illex or similar lures - one of these anglers is reputedly one of the best in France, which does not surprise me. No bass reported BTW. The best fish was around 55 cms and all were returned alive. If you have a boat live is a lot easier but this mark can be fished at low water from the shore via a long walk down the beach at Enniscrone. You can also fly fish for the sea trout all the way up the river on the flood as far as Scurmore and there's always a chance of a salmon. Make sure you have a NWRFB licence, 29 EUR in all tackle shops.

Easky can be littered with surfers which can kill the fishing stone dead IMHO so better to try it nearing darkness and in light airs...

FWIW...

well the ferrys booked and should be on emarald soil by saturday2 nd july

off to waterville then upto ballina area. If any one wants to meet up/fish then that would be great. I can offer some good return help in cornwall etc.

If any body has tips on decent easily accessed affordable salmon fishing(ie not the ridge pool!) that would be a welcome bonus.

Hi Barramundi ,
Re: the salmon fishing , there are several free stretches on some very decent rivers . The problem is finding out where they are .
The river BELOW the bridge at Easky is one .
There is apparently an 8 mile stretch of the Moy just down the road from me ( Tubbercurry area ) . I think it is shown on one of the maps & guides you can get free from the fisheries board .
There's another on the Belmullet road just outside Ballina .
Have just realised this has nothing to do with sea fishing ( SAI ) . PM me if you'd like to continue off-site .

hi barramundi

hope i can help, but dont know where to start, the estuary would be best fished from a boat as you would be able to fish it in different places on both and side also the bar(prob.. the best spot) can be fished from a safe boat. on low tide and a strong wind the channel can be difficult to nagivate and getting stuck a real possaibilty if you are not too sure of it. best bait would be sandeel, fly and a strip of mackeral that looks similar to a sandeel. you can fish for sea trout bank only in an eara known as the black banks this is best fished at night. there has been bass cought ocassionally in the estuary but i wouldn't hold my breath.

as for salmon fishing there is many reasonable priced beats available for different types of fishing i.e. fly, spin, worn or prawn although prawn isn't allowed every where. there is also free fishing availble on nearby rivers but its best enquire where is fishing best when you arrive as conditions are unperdictable.

if there is anything else that i can help you with or you need to know hesitate to ask.

Are there any reasonably priced ghillies available around the Erne estuary.I priced the guy from near Ballina but he was looking around 180 euros a day[for max 2 anglers], he really seemed like he knew his business but too dear for me.

Theres a bunch of us fish there with Judd every year at end of august/beginning of september for sea trout in the estuary, the guy really does know his stuff. Lunch usually consists of a barbecue on an island in the middle of the estuary and if you have been lucky enough to catch something worthwhile, then that is what you have. If not, plenty of other stuff :D It might seem a bit steep but its a top day out I have to say. Usually plenty of small sea-trout around with the odd bigger fella thrown in to keep you on your toes.

i totally agree with pete a top day out it can only be topped by a night or two camping on the island. i went down last year with the other half, my sister and her other half. i spent most of the time putting on there bait and untangling there lines and showing them how to fish. three hours later we were heading home with five trout between 1-2.5lb and about five more smaller trout being returned. if only i could be down there on a day like today i would be like a pig in that brown stuff. as far as im aware there are one or two other boats and gillies for hire on the estuary that might be a bit more reasonable and i think (not sure) that judd will hire out just the boat and engine, that might be a good few euros less.

Depends on how many to a boat mate, do it the odd time alright but most of our fishing on the moy was freelining mack belly strip or sprat on a size 6 or 8 hook. When I have flyfished there ive used a size 8 teal blue and silver to good effect but being in a small boat with company this was to a minimum.
