Bass closed season

#1 Post by Morgan44 »

Hi , it's great to see that in Ireland you guys are far ahead of the UK with a closed season for bass from what I'm reading May 15th to June 15th , also great news to know that it will be over by the time this Welshman moves to cork . I have been known to keep one for tea every now and again , I don't want to open up the whole debate on size fish to keep and all that we all have our opinions on it personally I think the smaller fish are better eating but we all want to picture of the ten pound bass in our arms it's just a shame over here most of those pictures are taken in someone's back garden and not on the coast just before they put it back . Anyway back to the reason for my post I have always been concerned catching fish around spawning time and by reading all the posts on here you guys with far more knowledge than me know that bass and many other fish don't just spawn during these closed periods . I was fishing a rock mark in wales on the weekend and caught a lovely bass of around three pounds and a trick I was shown by someone years ago was to just milk it gently and some spawn started to come out . This fish was quickly put back and swam off strongly . Before you all rush to the ports to stop a strange welsh guy with a thing about milking fish from moving to your beautiful country , it would be awful to take a fish on the opening day only to find it full of spawn when you are gutting it in the sink at home , you guys with far more knowledge than me can probably tell by looking if it's spawned or not , me I will stick to milking , well I'm welsh we are allowed to be a bit strange .
