Portamao,Algarve, Portugal

#1 Post by Dave78 »

Hi all,
I'm heading here in 2 months time, I know I need to purchase a licence from an ATM machine upon arrival or face having all my gear taken by the Police, which is fair , when in Rome and all that.
Has anybody fished this area, I did on a boat many years ago but was given mackerel gear to fish for mullet, I saw one garfish landed from 30 people that day poor enough fishing, I have checked google maps of the area and think I have spotted a few marks, would anyone have tips on tackle shops, bait and what I can expect to catch, I'm heading there mid August, I'm doing my research now to see what gear I need to bring.

cheers

I got a few Bream and Mackerel from the rocks near Albuferia before, I was using strips of Squid on a very light float set up, I just bought some very cheap gear when I was there, nothing special. Everybody else I saw fishing there were after Squid, bit of a weird set up they had going on.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office!

Nice one breamer, mullet were huge alright , it was my first time seeing a garfish the last time I was there. I wouldn't mind hooking in to a few gars

Yep huge mullet. I have personally never caught the garfish but I have seen the locals getting them. They fight like stink!!

Had a Gar and a few small Bream last year in Tenerife on light float gear, size 8-10 hooks, using pieces of fresh shrimp as bait, worked for most of the mini species around the rocks too.

Bring some good elastic thread with you, the small fish trip the hooks in seconds.

The licence can only be bought from a bank machine using a portugese account. Stupid rule, you couldnt make it up. Contact your hotel or wherever your staying and ask them to sort it before your arrival. Its €12 for a month. Failing that you need to stalk locals using the atm asking nicely or call to an irish bar. When it asks for your id number put in your passport number instead.
The guy who owned our apartment got mine and he said it was very akward. He said there was loads of options and by time he was nearly finished he was timed out and had to start again. This happened a 2nd time and there was a que so he left and got it early the next morning.
Pretty stupid system really making it hard for tourists to aquire one. They should be welcoming and foriegn money coming in and make it as easy as possible.
