Half moon smoothies

#1 Post by ark rose glenn »

People:me and mark12976

Duration:7pm until 2am

Tide:high at 8pm.. 3.2mtr tide

Weather:strong wsw winds

Bait: rag and peeler

Rigs:pennel pully and 2 hook flapper

Results:10 smoothound

Report: mark had a few rag and crab left over from the night before so we taught we would use it up and head for poolbeg for a chance of some hounds. With the tide being just a 3.2 meter I taught the chance of a smoothie is slim. Sure we will give it a bash anyway and use up the bait... Got there for the first hour before high tide.. Casted out with a huge crab bait and caught a monster 10cm whiting lol ... High tide at 8 so we waited and waited, putting fresh baits on every 10 to 15 minutes and for the first 4 and a half hours there wasn't a single sniff of a fish, apart from foul hooking the odd baby whiting. So I changed to a 2 hook flapper with size1 hooks in hope of even a small flounder or to play around with the whiting. Baited with rag Casted out and 3 and a half hours after high tide .... BANG ... Rod nearly got pulled off the pod. If I hadn't got a clutch set my Rod was gone. What a great fight that fish gave me... First smoothie of the night. So all rods baited up with peeler and for the next 3 hours we constantly had smoothies taking our baits.. We dropped a lot of fish and had 10 smoothies between us . All fish were 4lb to 6lb and 1 was 3lb Roumer has it ya can't get smoothies at poolbeg if the tide is not over 3.8 ... Well I just proved that wrong ..lol. All in all a session that we just wanted to use up some bait ended up a great session ....

Nice fishing lads, some fine Hounds there. It's hard to second guess the feeding patterns and behavior of transient fish species such as the Smoothound. I've caught them at all stages of the tide (high-low), on big tides and small tides and in the bright of day, early morning and complete darkness, stormy conditions and flat calm conditions. They do seem to feed harder on bigger tides and bites are more ferocious. One of the few unpredictable fish we have left that provides so much sport; ya gotta love em :D .

Totally agree with what ya said and they are a lot more active on the higher tides and in better numbers too. It's good to know I can get them at the low tide now. Saves me waiting on big tides to fall on days that I'm not in work.great fish and great fight off them . Even the small ones give ya a bit of stick

Thanks lads. I think another trip is on the cards soon... Anyone know if any of the wexford beaches are throwing up any smoothies lately. I'm not looking for any marks. Just wondering if anything is been caught further south ...
