spinners gone dull.

#1 Post by jono,b »

Guys,

Any tips on brightening spinners that have gone dull from being left in the box? Shame to chuck them if I can make them nice and shiny again. Thanks.

I wouldnt chuck em, I wouldnt brighten em up, I would use em just as they are. Soft plastics arent shiney...! Spinners dont need to be either. Sandeels underwater blend in as do smolts etc, they dont stand out like luminous offerings to a bass. Anything edible in the sea doesnt want to be seen. I know plenty of anglers who will un-shine a new lure when they purchase it, very often me included depending on the lure..!

Im not saying shiney lures dont work before I get jumped on, just maybe the shiney ones are better at catching fishermen..! ;-)

I use Brasso to shine up my lures as it is the shine that gives off a reflection which attracts the fish

Confidence plays a big part in fishing so if you feel the need to shine them up well go for it. I only use a Kilty now and again and they work even if they are old and rusty, just put on a new hook and away you go. But I will say Pollock seem to love bright colours on a metal and a bit of flash.

I caught my best sea trout last year on a battered white hansen stripper. The white had peeled off almost completely. Just watch the hooks, if they are dulled or rusty, chuck 'em and replace them with a new one. Shiny new lures aren't always necessary.

Hope you don't mind the link Jim:

Brilliant example Steve, and as usual Jim great articles in the blog. I remember years ago my bro in law forgot the lure box. I was traveling light and all I had was a battered german sprat with no trebbles..! It had no shine and even had salt water damage.
It had hit a thousand rocks in its time. :-)

We attached a 2/0 to the top of the lure and the bottom via the split rings. The lure looked like Frankenstein..! The hook at the top stuck out at a 90 degree angle. He caught 2 bass for the 20 mins they were there whlile I, standing 20 feet away caught nothing..!

Like I said Shiney lures catch anglers. :-) Believe me Im the worst lure tart out there but Im learning more and more the lure is far down the line of what you need to get right first.

If it was as simple as just attaching a shiney lure we would all be catching lunkers..!
