Sligo beach and rock, 2/1/2013

#1 Post by johnwest »

People:Me

Duration:7 hrs

Tide:Flood plus 1 hr ebb

Weather:Dry, fresh southerly wind

Bait:Frozen razor and mackerel

Rigs:2 hook flapper, single clipped

Results:flounder, strap conger, coalfish

Report:
Headed out for a session on the beach, this time during daylight to try and avoid the plague of small coalies on my last night session. That part of the plan worked; no coalies. Not much else for a couple of hours either though I did manage to snag and lose a rig on the sandy beach, of which more later. I set up 2 rods as usual fishing in close with a 2 hook flapper and small mackerel strips and razor and at range with a clipped 1/0 baited with razor and mackerel. Eventually at about half tide I got a bite on the near rod and after giving it a minute to develop, reeled in a 25cm flounder which had taken both baits. I wonder which he took first, razor or mackerel? No more activity followed so an hour before high tide I decided to move to a rock mark. As I retrieved the long range rod I could feel a dead weight on it, presumably yet more weed. In fact it turned out to be my lost rig from earlier and with the added bonus of a plump 30cm flounder attached!
A while later I set up on the rock mark using bigger reels with 30lb line straight through and rotten bottom rigs. I only fished for about 2 hrs and managed a strap conger and small coalfish (well it was dark by now). The bottom turned out to be cleaner than expected and no gear was lost. I had never fished this spot before but I will return for a longer session.

Hi rushnaldo, I wonder how long the flounder was on the recovered rig? And what did it snag on to begin with? BTW, I came across a load of your pictures by accident a couple of months ago, some great shots esp of those trawlers at Killybegs stuffed to the gunwales with fish.

Thanks Dan, I have never got that many flats from that beach but I did get my best so it encourages me to go back.

Yeah, it's near time we had a report from you, even a blank!

Thanks Eric, you can understand the lengths I go to to try and retrieve lost ones!

Thanks lucky13, on the rougher ground mark I tried using the upside down lead link clip as a rotten bottom, you mentioned it recently in a post by Big Bear, it worked every time so thanks for that.
