True. And it not just the online stuff, quite a few anglers/readers just aint here any more, they're gone abroad in search of work. Even this site seems a bit quieter nowadays.

Regardless as to whether you liked the magazine or not, that's some sentiment to have in response to a man who has put a large amount of time, effort and money into producing an Irish publication for Irish consumers promoting Irish fishing who has had to endure watching his business slowly slide to a point where its gone to the wall. There's a personal side to all these failing businesses in this country and I don't think David Dinsmore deserves comments such as that.

Well said Pete. Speaking personal I was very happy as an Irish person contributing irregularly to one of Ireland's angling magazines. Apart from the dire consequences for David and others - a much forgotten hero was Patrick Browne the designer for the past few years.

His passion for portraying brilliant features on all aspects of angling in this country was exemplary and no doubt did great things for angling here. There was a certain magic there that you felt could work if you could just get it to him.

It's a sad reflection when we can't at least recognise our own national strengths and are quick to kick people when the're down.

I totally agree Jim. Patrick was a magician on the design end of things and produced some stunning looking features out of pictures that oft left a lot to be desired. (Speaking for myself on that!) The irish angling scene is a poorer place without it and that's the bottom line.

Tis a shame alright. Bought it regularly but from the outset I always wondered how long it would last, its a very niche market in a small country. If you look at the big UK mags they only survive because of a)much bigger potential market and b)most of the mags these days are filled with lucrative advertising for big mail order companies. We have neither a) nor b) here.

Fair play to everyone involved for giving me many an enjoyable read.

Get a grip, that's a stupid thing to say, if you think you can do better well theres an opening now so go ahead. Am always sorry to hear about anyone's business closing no matter what it is and I also have alot of respect for people who put in the time and effort to make it work.

Thats a pity I will miss it great magazine especially if you were into different types of fishing however I heard from a lot of people who only fished one type sea/bait/fly/ coarse etc that it was too broad for them. I wonder what will happen to all the articles etc that have been published. I often thought that a collection of different articles themed in separate publications would be very desirable. I for one would love to see jim bass articles as an annual? the different lakes and maps they did all round the country, dihghy/light boat angling lots of great articles there and great journalism again will be sorely missed

Shame it's gone, enjoyed reading it over the last few years. It had a very broad scope which I liked as I always learned something from reading about different fishing methods. Was a reasonable price too.

Our market is small and therefore an Irish magazine has to cover all disciplines - great for some anglers but leaving others feeling that there was "not enough for them" in each issue. Irish Angler never shirked the issues. IA was at the forefront and was ahead of the game in covering many developments in our sport. It certainly was the best produced angling magazine to come out of this country and as good or better than magazines abroad to boot.
As I wrote a piece for that first issue May 2004 little did I think that I would be still hammering the keys right up until the last one. I enjoyed every minute! Sometimes in the depths of a bad winter a piece might take writing but in general they just wrote themselves.

It is tough times for many.

I just heard today of a friend of mine that they had stopped printing the irish angler,i was wondering why i hadnt being able to get it,i was a regular buyer of the magazine,even my wife would pick it up for me if i hadnt got it,i won one of there comps 2 yrs ago it was a greys muti tip rod which i still use and when i ring david dinsmore to thank him,he was delighted i rang him to thank him as he told me that i was the first one ever to ring and thank him for winning a prize,same year i meet him at the fly fishing fair here in galway and he asked me what i worked at,i told him that i worked in the defenceforces and he said to me that the next time that i was going overseas to let him know and he would send out a half a dozen copys of the mag every month and make it available online to us also,im sorry to see it go as there was always good reading in it and alot of the fly dressing patterns that were printed i got alot of fish on,Good luck to you david dinsmore and thanks to all the good reads over the years.

As iv being reading the posts to all who read this, one of the biggest contributers to the Irish Angler who is also a contributer to this website is Jim Clohessy who no one has mentioned,he wrote some great articules over the years and gave some great advise and tips about our beloved sport of sea fishing weather boat or beach.

As for Shane H what ever paper your using to wipe your own arse with i presume its one of the foreign rags that your buying and putting Irish Companys and jobs out of business and i hope that it lets you know your using it,need i say anymore ......

A depressing event alright, a reflection too maybe how our country north and south has gone. From the boom years in 2004 when it was launched to the economic depression of today as it ceases publication. In those intervening years I think a load of us on this site have appeared either by picture or name in its pages, . It gave an opportunity too for a lot of new and good Irish angling writers, the likes of Jim Clohessy, Pete Davis, Terry Jackson were better than most of what was available even in the bigger budget UK publications

Another thing, as far as angling/marine conservation and the future of our sport David Dinsmore was by far the most vocal and active angling magazine editor out there. I don't think the guy got half enough credit for this. I'm thinking of the salmon farm protests but also on over fishing in our seas too. Whether on the editorial section of the magazine, on facebook/twitter, on RTE radio or indeed meeting various Ministers face to face he did more than any of his counterparts, here or in the UK.

When you get down to it and the same goes for the tackle shops, it is jobs that are being lost. At Irish Angler it is David and Patrick. I can only hope that some day in the future when this country maybe manages to turn around that we'll see Irish Angler again on the shop shelves and competing with the UK publications.
