there was a lot of talk that the subsidies of these mega trawlers were going to be reformed but when push came to shove as usual the big boys got their way in europe

Wow. Wonder whats out there in big numbers enough to draw a heavyweight fleet like that - mebbe the Iceland mackeral shoals on their way south again?

Almost certainly blue whiting. Most of these boats are Dutch and they have the biggest quota for this species even though they are to be found off our coast. Ireland only has a very small percentage of this quota for this species.

The Annelies Ilena is able to process 350 tonnes of fish a day and can store 7,000 tons of graded and frozen catch
blue whiting max. published weight: 830.00 g so it takes 1176 blue whiting to make 1 tonne
1176x7000=8232000 blue whiting
The Annelies Ilena can process over 8.2 million fish in 20 days,if she fished 300 days per year then she would catch 123480000 fish
one boat could catch 123 million fish per year

Nothing to do with the Irish boats. Ireland has one of the best Pelagic fleets in Europe. All to do with the EU and quotas. Historical trade offs and Species allocation across the European fleets. We get Mackerel and the Dutch get Blue Whiting.

I was in Killybegs a few weeks ago and saw some Irish trawlers (big ones) unloading boarfish, palm of your hand sized fish. The quay was littered with them and the trawlers were very heavily loaded (over loaded?)with them.

Too true and fook all will be done, the approach to bi-catch is all wrong. Soon we will be lucky if we have goby's in rockpools

Boar fish are a targeted species and not a by-catch. Used for fishmeal and also the Chinese buy them for Human consumption. They are a controlled stock much the same as Mackerel.
