3000/4000 size reel recommendactions?

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

3000/4000 size reel recommendactions?

#1 Post by sailnfish »

Hi folks. I'm in the market for a new spinning reel to join my rear drag exage 4000's. So far I am considering a shimano aernos, Penn battle and surecatch unity . Any input on these or any other reel around the same price point would be much appreciated. Cheers :)

I have a Battle 2000 nice reel but a bit concerned about dismantling when the need arises! I have changed back to a Unity30 for a while. I have a couple of Unitys, a 45 and a 30. The 30 is a super reel for lure fishing.

I've had a couple of dodgy Penn reels over the last couple of years. Namely the surfmaster 750 and the captiva cv2. With that said, the surfblaster 8000 has been good to me ! l Will have a look at the surecatch, is there anyone selling them around cork? Thanks for the feedback.

just a word of warning with the aernos if using braid - it has a slightly different bail arm system than on the exage for example and has caused problems for some when using braid - the braid can catch in it resulting in it digging into the bail arm. having said that i use a seido which has the same bail arm system and have never had any issues with it. just make sure you manually flip the bail arm over after casting

I was looking at the 3000s with the shallow braid spool. An idea if this reel has the same bail arm setup as the others in the aernos range? cheers for the info

i'm almost sure that they do. as i said i've never had an issue with that particular bail arm system while using braid but have read on another forum of people having problems with it so just wanted to give you the heads up. also a mate has an aernos 1000 and really likes it

I have the aernos 3000 and never had the bail arm issue. I got 120 yards of 15lb braid on mine with a tiny amount of backing. If you wanted braid on 1 spool and mono on the other then the 2500 might be a better option.

Have a looks at the Stradic FJ 2500/3000. Superb reel, really smooth and very powerful.

They look like a lovely reel, might be out of reach in terms of budget though :(

It's the Technium that has the bail issue. Exage and aernos should be fine. Have a look at daiwa in 2500/3000 size also. They lay braid beautifully and no bail problems.

the bail arm system on the aernos is the same as the one on the technium
if on a budget i'd also go with a front drag exage - never heard a bad word about one. the newer models (fd) are even lighter than the older fc range

Anyone think i should buy another exage? ;) I might chance a front drag one although I like the fighting drag lever on the rd. With that said the aernos is very shiny....
I'm appreciating all the replies, thanks folks :)

I have aernos and unity and I have to say the unity is a cracking reel for the money hands down the best reel for 100 euro around, it won't let you down great for bass and loads of cranking power for pollack and wrasse there is one on ebay but it's the 4500 size.i have the 3000 size and don't know the size difference between both maybe Jim c does.
