Co. Clare Wrasse & Pollack 13/09/13
People:Myself and a mate
Duration:Dawn - 12pm
Tide: HT about 10.30
Weather : windless, cloudy, warm
Bait:firetails, lunker city worm in Silver/white
Rigs:
Results: Wrasse, Pollack
Report: Managed to escape out twice over the past week holiday I spent in Clare. First session was on the 11th, dawn till midday, tried my best trying to land a bass on the fly around lahinch estuary, but it wasn't to be, great morning to be out around this beautiful part of Ireland though. Had great craic yesterday, gave up chasing Pollack with the fly rod after about 3 hours and broke out the jellies, then the fish seem to just turn on! the wrasse all took literally at my feet as I was lifting my lure out of the water, by god those boy's punch above their weight!, serious craic on light gear! Must have missed about 10 takes! Heart in mouth stuff! Have to get back down here again soon

I think they just weren't feeding, I'd a fast sinking line on, and my mate was on an intermediate, tried all types of flies and retrieves, no takes. Sure that's fishing for you

Re: Co. Clare Wrasse & Pollack 13/09/13
just asking as i headed out with 2 other guys recently to target wrasse on the fly..Kgarr wrote:I think they just weren't feeding, I'd a fast sinking line on, and my mate was on an intermediate, tried all types of flies and retrieves, no takes. Sure that's fishing for you
the other 2 guys started with the fly but then soon changed to small soft plastics because of the lack of hits, but i persisted with the fly
we were standing in a neat line on some rocks casting into the same pool of water and we even occasionally swapped positions. i was fishing the same depth and retrieval speed but, needless to say, they were catching constantly where i blanked

so im blaming the lack of movement of the fly in the water - just a theory - and am now devising a fly with a bit more wiggle..!
lets see

I've heard that crab and prawn patterns work well but have never tried them, would be great to get one on a fly alright. I was using streamers & clousers. The lunker city eel was huge and they were smashing it!

Re: Co. Clare Wrasse & Pollack 13/09/13
was trying a whole variety of shrimp patterns that day, the pollack were taking them but the wrasse werent.
the soft plastics these guys were using were like rubber worms, thats all, but they wiggled in the water - its the only explanation that i can come up with. im going to devise a wiggling black, worm-like, fly. will make a post if i get any wrasse on it..
cheers

Try the nayat hair Charlie, it's got a lovely flowing action in the water. Better still, I'm after receiving a pile of hooks in the post. I post you up a few. Might get started on them tomorrow and I'll put a bit of mono on some.chuckaroo wrote:i intend tocheers
