People:Myself
Duration:12 noon to 6pm
Tide:High tide at 2.15pm
Weather:Sunny then overcast with flat calm seas
Bait:Rag
Rigs:Wessex Rig and two hook clipped down
Results: 1 flat fish
Report:Headed to Five Mile Point with the intention of fishing the two hours up to high tide and two the far side. I was going to finally try and get the hang of the multiplier after studying the noble art of the pendulum cast via Youtube all week. But after setting it up, it sounded as if it chronically needed an oiling due to clearly audible clicking noises it was making every time the spool turned. (If there is any place to leave them in for a service i'm all ears.) Anyway went back to the fixed spool and rigged up with a Wessex rig hoping for a few flatties. Cast after cast brought mound after mound of weed all the way up to the high tide and down the other side. I persevered out of sheer stubbornness, not wanting to waste the top quality rag i got in Viking in Bray and also with the ten hours of night shift I have to look forward to tonight in mind. The hours ticked by and not a bite. I found myself longing to catch an oul dogfish that normally plague that beach. I switched over to the old reliable 2 hook clipped down rig and two hours after high tide the weed eased off. At 5pm on the "last cast" I managed a small flatfish and found myself smiling from ear to ear having avoided a blank. I stayed on until 6 but had no more joy. Although it was terribly weedy, for a beach that I often caught 20+ fish in a session not 5 or 6 years ago, it's really gone downhill.

I would hazard a guess that maybe your ratchet is engaged, depending on what model of reel it should be a button on the end plate opposite to the one with the handle on it. Try this before you go to a shop with it.

Re: Five Mile Point, Wicklow
Rights you are. I wouldn't be too familiar with them. Mind you I think bringing it down and getting it serviced wouldn't hurt. It's a few years old at this stage. Thanks lads
