Report: We fish the Colm Gallagher memorial cup up in Downings this time every year in memory of Colm who passed away nearly 10 years ago. It's normally a species hunt, fished by friends & familiar faces, but this year it was decided to include a days Sharking. So 15 anglers set off on Saturday morning on 3 boats, and after catching enough Mackerel for the day, we steamed out to the Shark grounds. We must have stopped on top of one, because we got the 1st run after only 10 minutes. It was a small blue of around 20lbs, but a good start none the less. Shortly after, we had a double hook up, which resulted in me getting a blue on deck of about 40lbs, but unfortunately James lost his close to the boat when his trace broke. His luck changed about half an hour later though when he landed a Porbeagle of about 70lbs, which gave a good account of itself. The sharks then went quiet for a couple of hours before we got another towards the end of the day. All the while we were getting Ling, Gurnards, Pollack and the like off the bottom. For the record, the total tally for the 3 boats was 10 blue to 55lbs & the Porgie. Sunday saw fresh and gusty westerlies, so the 3 boats just stuck their noses out of the bay long enough to feather a few Mackerel, where we watched 3 Basking sharks feeding. Then it was back into the shelter of the bay for the day. I got a few Ballan Wrasse up close to the rocks with ragworm & spinning rod, and enjoyed some nice flattie fishing on the drift, my own tally was a couple of Turbot, a couple of Plaice, a few Dabs, a Thornback & a Homelyn Ray. A really enjoyable weekend, I can't wait to get back up there!

Thanks, although I can't really take any credit for the Porgie, I was only watching!
