Wickow Bass - the one that didnt get away
People: Me, Steve R
Duration: 3 hours
Tide: Low
Weather: warm and breezy
Bait: Every lure under the sun
Rigs: NA
Results: 1 x powerful little bass
Report:
So we headed out to the new mark in Wicklow for a second time. Low water was 6pm, and the plan was to get there after work for about the 6.30 mark.Spring tides but the low pressure was a potential session spoiler. Sometimes we can look at too many parameters when we fish. I was going even if It was snowing last night. The mark looked great again. I went to the same spot I hooked one a few weeks back. Nice run from the big tide. Around 2 hours into The flood we noticed some sea trout jumping. A few seals showed up too and the water looked like something was going on. Kinda hard to describe. Ye just knew fish were there.
We saw a few fish swirl on the surface, then a few large trout jumped. I switched to a sea trout type lure and had a rattle at distance. Typical trout type Hit. A few more casts and bringing the lure in through one of the gullies…BANG. Fish on. No mistake I knew immediately what it was. A couple of runs and efforts To get to the kelp later I landed a nice schoolie. Punching above his weight. About a pound and a half but some fight off him. My mate Steve said the rod was bouncing
All over the place. Managed to get this guy safely landed and a quick pic before releasing. Steve then had a bass follow right to his feet before shooting off. A couple more nocks at distance then it all went quiet and the seals moved on. I had a few small Pollock dart at the lure every now and then but they were small. We fished til about 10 and reluctantly called it a day. If I didn’t have work today and Had to drive home I would have plugged well into darkness. That mark definitely holds bigger bass.
Walking back long the rocks the moon was up and there was a nice Rolling swell coming in. Torture..! Delighted though, 2 visits and 2 bass. Im going to be all over this mark from now until November.
