wexford, east coast then south coast

#1 Post by corbyeire »

People: myself jhcabs +2 sat, me fein sunday 7th july

Duration: 21.00-0200 and 20.30-0100

Tide: dropping

Weather: nice and calm, wind a bit stronger sat night

Bait: frozen crab, fresh rag, mac, sandeel

Rigs: pulleys flappers

Results: Sat, 4 pups, 2 dogs, Sun, 1 flounder, 2 turbot, 1 smoothie

Report: headed to the east coast with jh on his quest for a double figure smoothie
the wind was cool from the south but there was no surf - thougth there might be a few bass about
the tide was dropping and after a chat to another angler who blanked it put a downer on us
fair play to him he gave me about 15 hand dug rag - thank god!

no bites until real darkness - jh missed one - then i got a pup on the rag
the boys had a debate and talked of heading after 2 hours - no more joy for them
i picked up another pup on the rag
at this stage if i put the gear in the car i was going home so i let them off to another mark

the crab was doing nothing so i stopped putting it out and put on a sandeel - and banged it out
reeled in with a bit of a fight thougth it was a bass or something of that ilk with no smoothies round - turned out to be a dog!

then it went quiet - was on the last cast routine and got another pup, then stayed a bit - got another
thinking i was into another wave of smoothies the crab went out again - but no bigger ones

stuck on the sandeel again and got another dog - was wrecked and headed for the hills

convicned myself then to head out again sunday evening, with the weather and conditions must be perfect for smoothies - ive heard the beach in question fishes really well when there is a change in wind direction, it was coming from the NE now so time to put a theory to the test

was scratching and putting out a bigger bait
got a turbo about 15cm first cast

then a flounder 19cm a cast later - noticed the dreaded weed showing as the tide stripped
begining to learn the weed has to be worked around on this venue

then quiet - bigger lumps managing to connect with the distance rod - debating to leave or not
then pulled in a teabag turbot under a pile of weed stayed on
was feeling tired but overcame it into the true darkness - noticed some amazing features on the beach

little pools 3x5m behind mini sandbars with small channels back to the main water - thats where those flatties were hiding out!

it was probably right on LW when the rod banged - def fish on
brought in to my surprise a smoothie on the flapper - a crab claw and 3 legs on a size 4 - he was 71cm
about 3lb - my best of the season so far

like a fool stayed on hoping more would show - but that was it
happy enough with the results and what fine nights to be out

there was some chap on the beach taking photos i think - i thought it was some intricate netting going on but when i got down to the carpark i could see a tripod and the lighting he was using, changing shade and colour etc.
