North Wexford 28th & 29th June

#1 Post by dfella25 »

People: Myself

Duration: 10pm until 1am both nights

Tide: Rising tides to 1-2am

Weather:Dry with a soft Southerly on Friday and flat calm on Saturday

Bait:Rag and crab

Rigs: 2 hook flapper size 2 hooks and a pulley pennel rig size 2/0 hooks.

Results:Smooth Hounds, bass, flounder, dabs, a weever fish and a gazillion doggies

Report:
I was staying in Wexford for the weekend so I decided to fish the local beach. On Friday night I headed down as darkness fell and set up with rag on the flapper and crab on the pulley. Started off with a mix of dabs and flounder before I got a wallop and landed my first hound of the summer. Delighted with it although it was a male and no monster. Then the dog fish came on the feed in force after an hour into darkness. Then after midnight I got a knock that wasn't a doggie bite and reeled in my first bass of the summer. Quick snap and put him back and cast in again to continue my doggie bashing. Another half hour or so past and got another bass bite and this lad was a little bit bigger. Threw him to the suds and with no more hounds about decided to pack it up for the night.

The following night I was short on bait so headed down a little later on and set up. The sea was flat calm and I tooked into another dog fish bonanza even managing to fowl hook a weever fish. That's my swimming over with for another year! With a mixture of flats in between I began to think I'd call it a night before I got a bang and was into a hound. This guy was fighting all the way in swimming left to right the closer he got. Pulled him onto the beach and unhooked him when my other rod bent over. I was into another hound however this one was smaller and not as much fun. I then sat down to re-bait my trace when I looked around to my right to see two eyes glowing in the beam of my head lamp not more then a few meters away. I leapt out of my skin with the girlish high pitched scream I've ever heard. A fox had been quietly watching me no doubt thinking about raiding my bait bag. He trotted off looking back every few steps as I tried to compose myself! After that shock I sheepishly packed up my gear and very cautiously, in case of more terrifying monsters headed home for the night.
