Report:
I had got myself a LFR set up recently and went for a couple of sessions during the week. On the first day I headed to a mark I have fished quite a bit. On arrival there were three lads set up in my usual spot so I headed around the corner. It was fairly windy which made casting difficult but I still managed to get myself a nice little wrasse. It fell to a white Marukyu Isome worm on a 3.5g jig head. I think it's a ballan wrasse? Does anyone know a good way to distinguish between ballan and corkwing wrasse?
At this stage the wind was blowing hard and dragging the line and lure into shore meaning I was only covering a limited area with my casts. I decided to try back at the usual spot which is more sheltered as there was a bit of space beside two lads who were just setting up. I was immediately into two small pollack on the first two casts. Happy days! Then another small wrasse, this time on a pink power isome worm. I didn't get another bite all evening, which might have been due to the two lads beside me plonking huge weights and baits in and out of the water or due to the presence of a small conger that one of them almost landed.
On the second day I headed a bit further afield to a spot that I have caught some decent pollack before. I helped my mate set up and he was immediately into a fish on a black firetail worm. A sign of things to come we hoped! I got set up with the lrf rod and had a great session. After losing a couple of nice fish I learnt the lesson of setting the drag correctly on the reel when using such a light set-up. The highlight of the evening was a decent pollack of about 3-4 pounds (I'm not good at estimating weights?). I had a couple of smaller fish, all of which put a nice bend in the rod and I missed another good fish that spat the hook as we were trying to land him in the net. The best lure of the evening was a small bright yellow curly grub.
All in all two good sessions and I really enjoyed using the LRF set-up. I'm looking forward to getting out again and targeting some of the smaller species.

First pic looks like a c wing cos of the black spot on the centre of the wrist of the tail, second pic looks to be a sml Ballan. Don't quote me on that! Nice session all the same. Ya can't beat a bit of LRF ing.
fair play.

Nice session Sean and a very good report to boot!
The best way to identify a corkwing is to look at the tail. There is a clear black spot on the wrist of the tail which only the corkwing wrasse has, so yours are both small ballans.

Thanks for the replies lads! Looks like they are both ballans after all. I have to agree with Drew on it being a great way to fish. Even the tiddlers give a spirited account of themselves on this set up.
