Rathmullan 17/6/13.....mental!

#1 Post by mackfish »

People:me

Duration:5hrs

Tide:low at 6.30ish

Weather:calm, warm, just perfect

Bait:frozen mac

Rigs:3/0 pulley and 2/0 pulley

Results:thornbacks and a dab

Report: With me knowing I wouldn't get out for the rest of the week or weekend, and gearing johnrooney got his thornback, I headed to the pier. When I got there, people were spinning and there was two people in my usual corner so I set up at the other side, two rod went out and after 5 mins I took them in to see that the bait had been stripped leaving only bare hooks!
Soon after the people on the far side packed up and left so i moved over and cast out, the bait was only in the water a couple of minutes when the rod took a bend, fish on! As I was reeling in, the other rod took a tap...tap...bend. I quickly got the first in, quick photo and back again. The second rod had a smaller male on it. Released aswell. I baited up one rod and threw it out, and as I was cutting the mackerel for the hook on the other, another bend...another ray. This kept happening, I didn't have time
to do anything else, the only break came when I reeled in a wee chunky dab.
I was now double baiting, and having rigs ready, it was mental. No sooner would I have a rig ready but one of the rods would bend. It was ray after ray after ray.
A guy came over as I was hand lining one up the side of the pier and asked if he could have it, but on further discussion we realised neither us had the knife skills to pull it off so that ray went back.
I only got to take photos of the first four and the dab as my phone went dead, lesson learned, make sure phone is fully charged!
It calmed down over slack water at low tide but not for long, the rods started bending again, more fish and no way of taking pics, I was angry at myself for letting the phone die.

I was down to my last two pieces if bait and after 5 hours my arms were sore, so I baited up and cast. I started to pack up and wash my knife and small chopping board, put things away that I wouldn't be using, all I left out if the bag was my disgorger, thinking that I'd probably need it and not much longer after that...tap..tap...bend...another ray on, it was a small one so it was quickly dealt with, as I was throwing this one back and was setting the rod down, the remaining rod took a bend, as u reached for it and felt the weight, this one was heavy, really heavy. I was hoping to see a big female break the surface as I only had one with the rest being males, but as it showed up I could see it was just a small male but it had the line wrapped round the tail making it feel a lot heavier that it was, as I landed this, it was my 19th...NINETEENTH!!!!...mental evening fishing. It was one of them 'they'll never believe it' moments and with no way of taking pics, no real proof but it happened!..
My arms were sore when I got home, I've never had an evening like it!..

So end results: 19 thornback, 1 dab

ive had plenty of good days on there in the past.... maybe not that good, but i dont want to sound like a killjoy but im sceptical of posting reports like this as it only takes one bad'en to take this information to the wrong person and that channel will be hoovered up one dark summers night by a trawler. sorry for sounding so bleak!! (apparently they USED to catch tope off of here too, and stack em up on the pier). its probably better to leave the exact location to the imagination although photos can give that away i suppose
